Peter Payne Obituary

Peter David Payne passed away Thursday, May 23, 2013. He was born August 12, 1937 in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania. He is survived by his loving wife, Regina; their two devoted children, Charles and Maryalice and their spouses; four granddaughters, Bryana, Mackenzie, Emma and Kaylee; his beloved brother, William and his wife; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Peter's commitment to higher education began with his bachelor's degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1959 and his Ed.D. in Speech and Language Pathology from West Virginia University in 1968. In 1969, Peter became Professor of Speech and Hearing Sciences at Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois, and later, Department Head. In 1984, he was appointed Head of the Department of Communicative Disorders at the University of Louisiana - Lafayette and served as the Director of the Hawthorne Center. During his professional career, he authored many articles and papers, served on state and national professional organizations, and earned numerous grants and awards. He was active in his communities, serving with Sertoma Clubs in Peoria and Lafayette, coaching youth sports programs, and chairing the Lagniappe Dulcimer Fete. Following his retirement from UL-L, Peter became active in real estate in Fort Myers, Florida. He moved to Walker in 2006 to be closer to family. He will be sorely missed by his family, friends and former students. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center's Melanoma Research or to UL-L Department of Communicative Disorders. A memorial service will be held on Saturday June 15, 1:00-2:30 PM, at Seale Funeral Home, 1720 S. Range Avenue, Denham Springs.
