As a child Richard lived with his family in Panama and Honduras, returning to the states to attend Castle Heights Military Academy in Lebanon, Tennessee. He made many lifelong friendships there and would have been there to celebrate the 50th reunion of the graduating class of '63 in October. He spent 38 years piloting helicopters for PHI, Inc., retiring in 2006. He was an avid HAM radio operator (N5GHX), hunter and marksman, and in his later years enjoyed cruising on his Harley Davidson motorcycle. He was a member of the NRA, the Radio Amateur Service Club, and the Harley Owners Group Chapter of Hammond. He was a proud veteran of the US Army and served tours of duty in both Korea and Vietnam. He achieved the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 2, and was awarded the Air Medal (29 awards), the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal (2 Campaign Stars), the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Bronze Star, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Presidential Unit Citation, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry Unit Citation with Palm, and the Expert Badge in Pistol and Rifle. He will be remembered as a loving family man, a steadfast and loyal friend, a pilot's pilot, a dedicated patriot whose love of country was the cornerstone of his life--and for the mischievous twinkle in his eye. Eternal gratitude goes to the tender and compassionate ICU staff at Ochsner. Visitation at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 11000 Florida Blvd., on Thursday, April 25, 2013 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and again on Friday, April 26, from 12:30 p.m. until services at 2:30 p.m. Interment at Greenoaks Memorial Park on Florida Blvd.

The twinkle in his eyes will never be forgotten, so lovable & mischievous. I too, like Karen & Bo said above, was one of the lucky ones to work with he & Kathy for the LSU games for 7 years, what an awesome crazy guy. He made many of our lives so much richer for knowing him, he will be sorely missed. God bless

Mr. Dick was the most outgoing, fun man we have ever had the chance of being friends with. You are right, that twinkle in his eye and his smile, let you know something was up. We worked with him at LSU for over 7 years. His love for life was contagious and his humor was unforgetable and we are honored to have known him. He will be greatly missed.

Dick and I were fellow students at Castle Heights Military Academy in TN back in the 60s. Years later we were reunited as pilots at PHI and spent many hours flying together. The last time we got to visit was at a Castle Heights reunion about 3 years ago. Full circle for both of us. I am still in shock and will really miss him. Kathy, I will never forget meeting you at the last Heights reunion. I'll always remember Dick and all the fun times we had and I am so very sorry.

Kathy, your family lost a great deal with the passing of Dick. I was fortunate to have been able to fly with him for several years, and even more blessed to have him as a hunting companion and friend even after his flying career ended. I share your grief and if I can do anything to help, never hesitate to call. He will be truly missed.

Dick will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate enough to call him "friend". He was a superb pilot and mentor, a compassionate and patriotic man with an incredible sense of humor. He loved his family, his country, his LSU Tigers and the thrill of flying. My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this sad time.

Dear Kathy, I am very fortunate to have known Dick, a genuine true friend and soldier who put his life on the line for his country in Nam. He has a great sense of humor and loves his country and fellow Americans. I enjoyed being at Tiger Stadium with Dick and you. We had lots of fun and companionship. Dick is now up in Heaven flying angels around in his whirlybird. Love, Andy Guidry, N5AH

We lost a good man, a good co-worker and a good friend. He kept us laughing all the time. It was great working with him. We never stop missing the good guys. Our prayers are with his family. I am posting a pic of Dick & my grandson. He took us up on a flight. When I showed it to folks, they wanted a copy, one said that is the way Dick always was, "smiling". R.I.P.
