To the Labat family, you have my deepest sympathy. My mother just informed me of the passing of one of my favorite teachers. "Prof", as we affectionately called him was my fourth grade teacher at Fifth Ward Elementary. I cannot begin to tell you the impact he made on my life and my quest for learning. He was truly a great educator and may his soul rest in peace!!

We all remember our favorite and/or most influential teachers. Prof Labat was one of mine, for sure. Yes, I would get annoyed when he would shadow me into the library and replace my frivolous "tween lit" with something more profound, and which matched my advanced reading level. He knew that I needed and somehow wanted to be challenged. He was a great man and a wonderful example for all in Vacherie. RIP, Prof! Your students loved you for all you did for them!

As children, we always remember our favorite teachers. Prof was a favorite because he pushed me. He hated seeing me read tween books, and he pushed me to always read more and learn more. After all these years, none of his students have forgotten him, which is a beautiful and enduring testament to his influence on us all. With much sympathy, Erica Stein Riddle

This was a good man and one of my favorite teachers. Years later he would become a good source of stories and information about my dad.
I enjoyed many days sitting with him having a few drinks, telling and hearing stories, and watching him play solitaire in the fire station.
I remember getting weary of watching him get every last ounce of use from an old deck of cards. They'd be dog eared, and the deck was almost twice as thick as a new deck. So I brought some nice fancy plastic cards like they use in the casino because I couldn't bear to watch anymore. One of the more amusing memories was watching his amazement at how "slick" they were as he struggled to get used to them. But he loved it.
Weeks later on a return visit to the fire station, we're having drinks and I glance down at his game, and notice something peculiar. Everything looks fine except the actual cards. He had worn them down to where had used sharpies to draw the spots back on the cards! He couldn't bring himself to throw away such a "slick" deck of cards.
I gave him another plastic deck, but I'm not sure he ever used them.
