Hillar Moore Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 15 to Nov. 18, 2012.

Died November 14, 2012 at the age of 87 at Our Lady of the Lake Medical Center, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He was a good man. A true gentleman. A caring and giving man. A great husband, father, grandfather, godfather and friend to many. He will be sorely missed. Born on May 6, 1925 at Mercy Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana to Hillar C. Moore, Sr. and Mary Stevens Moore. Graduate of St. John the Baptist school and S.J. Peters High School in New Orleans. 1959 graduate of Loyola University with a bachelor's of Commercial Science. Moore, Sr. and Mary Stevens Moore; his wife, Bernadine Aiavolasiti Moore; his sister, Rosary Moore Hargroder and his daughter, Janet Ann Moore Webb. Survived by his brother, John Jerry Moore of Metairie; his children, daughter Debra Moore of Baton Rouge and Jimmy Rich; son, Hillar C. Moore III and wife Dawn Marie Moore; son, Michael J. Moore and Michelle Thibodeaux; son, David E. Moore and wife Rosiland Lacy Moore; son, Steven J. Moore and wife Brandi Moore; daughter, Judy Moore Vendetto and husband J. R. Vendetto. Survived by grandchildren Stephanie Webb; Michelle Webb Louviere; Bobby Todd; Dickey Todd; Hayden Moore; Hillar Moore IV; John Michael Moore; Emily Moore; Mary Ellen Moore; Daniel Moore; and Vincenza Vendetto. Survived by his great grandchildren, Miles Louviere and Avery Louviere and one on the way. Also survived by former son-in-law, E. J. Webb. There are many extended Moore family members too numerous to list. Family members are Hil and Sara Wegener, who have provided much support and strength over many years; Lori Wegener Harper and children Paul and Ashley Harper; Hil Wegener III and Robin, children Lauren and Kristen; Staci and Greg Scallon and daughters Catherine and Elizabeth and Juli and Lee Blackwell and son Collin; Dr. Joe and Erica Kott and children Jay and Mikalia; Mary Ann and Keith Simpson and children Hillary, Olivia, Benjamin and Grace; and Edward Hargroder and children Taylor, Caroline, and Evan. Special thanks to Hillar's many friends and acquaintances. There are so many friends and associates with the various organizations, particularly Associated Grocers, Our Lady of the Lake, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, SCORE, Marine Corps League, that it is difficult to name them all. Please know that he cherished his friendship with each of you. He was especially fond of his Marine Corps League buddies, Joe Corsentino, George Edmonson, V. J. Bella, Dick Brandt, Murphy Burke and others. Hillar's humanitarian and civic deeds have touched the lives of many, improving the quality of life for teens, tots, the elderly, the needy and the ill. As unassuming as he was generous, Hillar had a strength of character and a commitment to worthy causes that reflected his dedication to God, country, family and community. He was constantly involved in civic and charitable events, making positive impact on our community. He served on the Board of Directors of the Baton Rouge Symphony, where he coordinated volunteers, oversaw the hiring of staff and analyzed the Symphony's finances and development plans. Although retired from Associated Grocers after 50 years of service in the grocery industry, including 20 years as its President & CEO, Hillar continued to provide truckloads of food for the needy--and enlisted volunteers to deliver it all--every Christmas, year-in and year-out. He served as President of the Louisiana Grocers Co-op, Inc. In October of 1995, Hillar joined the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE). Sponsored by the U.S. Small Business Administration, he shared his business acumen with others just starting out. He served on SCORE's Executive Committee and as Vice Chairman and Chairman of the local chapter. Through Junior Achievement of Baton Rouge, Hillar volunteered his time as a teacher of economics at University High School. An active supporter of the Girl Scouts, he served on the Audubon Girl Scout Council's board. He served as Treasurer and a member of its Finance Committee and helped raise thousands of dollars in a capital campaign to construct the Marydale Center at Camp Marydale in St. Francisville. Hillar served for many years on the boards of both Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center and Ollie Steele Burden Manor. Devoted to the Catholic Church, he served as an Eucharistic Minister and Lector for the Chapel in OLOL Hospital and received an invitation from Bishop Hughes to become a member of the Equestrian Knights of the Holy Sepulcher - papal honorees for outstanding contributions to the local diocese. He served as Chairman of the Louisiana Dairy Stabilization Board and on the Arthritis Association of Louisiana Board. Hillar also served on the Board of Directors at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. When he became aware that funds were needed for indigent patient care and research, he proposed creating a charity golf tournament as a means toward that end. In 1990, the Mary Bird Perkins Pro/ Celebrity Charity Classic golf tournament was founded. In the past 21 years, the tournament has raised over $1.2 million in support of the Center. Hillar was the Founding Chairman of the tournament, served on its Executive Board, and on its Board of Directors. His involvement and leadership have helped save countless lives. Sergeant Major Moore was a proud 30-year veteran of the United States Marine Corps, having landed and fought on Iwo Jima, Guam and Saipan and activated for Korea and standing ready for duty in Vietnam. In the early 1970s, when several former U.S. Marines were trying to form a Marine Corps League in Baton Rouge, Hillar used his boundless energy to help establish the Choctaw Detachment of the U.S. Marine Corps League. Composed of active, retired and honorably discharged Marines, the League serves Baton Rouge by participating in Toys for Tots, providing flags for schools on Flag Day, arranging activities for residents of the Louisiana War Veterans Home and for Baton Rouge performances of the U.S. Marine Corps Band. With the same dedication and sense of duty he displayed helping to storm the beaches of Iwo Jima, Saipan and Guam, Hillar has been active in this organization in many capacities since its inception, including having served two elected terms as Commandant of the Detachment. He was instrumental in organizing Memorial and Veterans Day ceremonies for war veterans all over the state and served as Editor of the Marine Corps League newsletter. Over the years, Hillar was recognized for his tireless service and commitment to many organizations. He was the 60th recipient of the prestigious Golden Deeds Award in 2001, awarded by the Inner Civic Council and The Advocate. He received the National Society of Fundraising Executive's Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser Award in 1998; the Baton Rouge Speech and Hearing Foundation's Volunteer Activist Award in 2004; and the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center's Outstanding Service Award in 2009. In 2009, Hillar was inducted in the Business Awards Hall of Fame by the Business Report and Junior Achievement. His integrity and generosity have been a life-force in the Baton Rouge community. Hillar was a member of many other organizations throughout his life, some of which include: S.J. Peters Band, Coach of St. Matthews CYO boys and girls baseball and cabbage ball, Member of the St. John's Altar Boy Society, New Orleans Louisiana, Junior Achievement volunteer, U.S.S. Kidd-Louisiana Naval War Memorial Commission, USMC Toys For Tots Program, Ollie Steele Burden Manor, Arthritis Foundation of Louisiana, USMC Baseball League, Woman's Hospital Board of Directors, Audubon Girl Scout Council, Financial Committee and Volunteer, Board Member of the Greater Baton Rouge Chamber of Commerce, Baton Rouge Regional Eye Bank, Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank, interim director 2003, Baton Rouge Symphony, Eucharistic Minister and Lector at Our Lady of the Lake Medical Rosary Chapel, Louisiana War Veterans Home and the 2013 Grand Marshall, St. Patrick's Day Parade, "The Wearin' of the Green." Sergeant Majors are leaders and show the way. He loved life and lived it to the fullest, making every day and every relationship count. Everyone was someone special to him. He lived the right way, making a difference by leading by example. He spoke softly but carried a big stick. He raised seven children, many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and countless others. He was a unique individual who leaves a huge footprint in Baton Rouge. He will be remembered as one of the best men to have ever lived. Special thanks to all of the OLOL doctors and nurses, particularly doctors Petty, Rodney, Geisler, Guidry, Gamble, Adams, Allain, Kidder, Acosta; nurses Bronwyn, Rose, Holly, Dani, Jill, Lydia, Nicole, Cedric, Micah, David, Anne, Celynthia and Latoya as well as all of the OLOL staff who assisted Hillar. Special thanks to Fr. Sam Maranto, Fr. Tom Danso. Fr. Than Vu, Fr. Don Ajoko and the Franciscan Nuns. A very special thanks to our family's good friend Dr. Joe Cefalu for his support, guidance and encouragement during these difficult times. Pallbearers are his sons, Hillar III, Michael, David and Steven Moore, and grandsons, Hillar IV, John Michael Moore and Bobby Todd along with J.R. Vendetto, Eric Chris, Dee Holden and Chris Collins, representing just some of the many young men who have come through the Moore home over the past forty years and who consider Sgt. Maj. Moore as their father. Honorary pallbearers are the Choctaw Division of the Marine Corps League. Visitation will be held at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government Street, on Sunday, November 18, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Visitation on Monday, November 19, 2012 at St. Aloysius Church, 2025 Stuart Street, Baton Rouge from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial following visitation at St. Aloysius Catholic Church at 11 a.m. Burial at Green Oaks Memorial Cemetery, 9595 Florida Blvd., Baton Rouge, with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, 4950 Essen Lane, Baton Rouge, LA 70809, or to one of the many charitable organizations Sgt. Maj. Moore supported. An online guest registry is available at www.rabenhorst.com.

Mike, our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. How incredibly lucky I am to have met and worked with your father working and/or planning the Food Bank Slice of Life Golf Tournaments. There was just something special about him. He radiated warmth and love. We are all better for having known him.

November 20, 2012

Hillar & family, It has been a great honor to know your Dad for the past 10 years. He was such a kind, gentle, humble and noble man. He was every non profit organiation's dream volunteer and I'm glad I got to have him on my board for a very long time. He was always there to lend a helping hand, a faithful fundraiser and my friend and mentor. We also shared in common a connection to the USMC--my Dad also served in the same division in WWII in the South Pacific in some of the same campaigns. Wen my father passed in August '11 he helped arranged the Marine Corps Honor Guard for his funeral. It was one of the most meaningful experiences of my life and I wouldn't have had it without your Dad's help. We had a long visit a couple of months ago when he dropped by the office and we talked for about an hour on South Pacific campaigns--he just loved sharing military history with such eager ears as mine! While I am sad at his passing, he had such a long, full and wonderful life I am happy he brought so much into the lives of so many people. There's a quote that I just love and to me it describes your Dad perfectly: "What we have done for ourselves dies with us, what we have done for others remains and is immortl"--Albert Pike, American lawyer, journalist and soldier. God Bless to all of you--your Dad and the work he did will live on for many years to come!

Hillar,
I am so sorry for your loss. Upon reading the obituary I realized that your father had led a fuller life than most of us could ever imagine, but I know that as comforting as that knowledge is it cannot erase the pain you and the rest of your family must be feeling. The day before my mother received the news of his heart attack I had read a letter he had sent her along with some photos from their most recent St. John the Baptist reunion. Such a thoughtful act reminded me of what a kind man he was and how beloved he was by myself and all of the members of the St. Matthew CYO whose lives he touched with the generous gift of his time. My husband, Bob, served in the Marine Corps with your father as his sergeant major and has always spoken of him with the utmost respect. I will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.

Men of such dedication to serving their country and their communities are a rarity. Sgt. Major Hillar Moore Jr. was the epitome of a Marine and he lived our motto - "Semper Fidelis" - in everything he did. We all grieve with you, his family, for his absence among us but we take solace in the knowledge that such a man will have a reserved space at our Lord's side and we will see him again.
Always Faithful.....

To Hillar III and the Moore Family: I mourn your great loss and this community has lost an enormously dedicated community leader. I have known Mr. Moore since 1980, when I worked in the Community Relations Office at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center and that office was next door to the beautiful Rosary Chapel where we attended Daily Mass. It was then that I first met and saw almost daily Mr. Moore and several of his associates from Associated Grocers, including Mr. George Kadair [what a fun group of men. They kept the Sisters in stitches!]. Mr. Moore's passion for service and compassion, especially to the poor and forgotten in our midst, is a model for us to remember and emulate. As Mr. Moore told me once many years ago, "There is always something honorable we can do for the least of our brothers and sisters." May Hillar rest in eternal peace.
