Our mother, Melta Pourciau, passed away Friday, March 14, 2014 at the age of 93. She was a native of Pointe Coupee and a resident of New Roads. Mama was known by many names to her family and friends - Mama, Maw Maw, Maw Maw Mel, Mel, and Melta. She was a special person to all who knew her. Many of her friends will remember her at Morgan's Department Store throughout the years until their closing. Her love of family and the history of Louisiana, Pointe Coupee, and New Roads were evident with her years serving as docent at the Pointe Coupee Museum. Visitation will be held at St. Mary's of False River Catholic Church in New Roads on Tuesday, March 18, 2014 from 8 am until Mass of Christian Burial in the church at 10 am conducted by Rev. Msgr. Robert Berggreen. Interment will follow at False River Memorial Park. She is survived by her children, Millie Smith and husband Conday, Charles Pourciau and wife Lydia, Wayne Pourciau and wife Sandra, Yvonne Barbier, Marian Soniat and husband Al, Margaret Damare and husband Darrell, Robert Pourciau and wife Janet, Lorriane Langlois and husband Charles; one sister Ruby Guerin; grandchildren, Monette Smith, Rob Smith, Ty Smith, Jacques Pourciau, Andre Pourciau, Jean Pourciau, Sara Hendler, Eric Pourciau, Marc Barbier, Carmen Overturf, Ryan Damare, Amanda Pourciau, and Monique Langlois; great grandchildren, Madison Smith, Emily Smith, Hogan Smith, Morgan Messina, Jacob Pourciau, and Mary Scott Pourciau. Proceeded in death by her husband, Urbin Pourciau; parents, Arthur and Meledia Guidroz; sisters, Nora Jarreau, Eunice Picard, and Una Berthier. Pallbearers will be Ty Smith, Rob Smith, Marc Barbier, Mike Barbier, Eric Pourciau, Andre Pourciau, Ryan Damare, and Frank Springstead. The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Dr. Donald Doucet and staff, Pointe Coupee Hospice, and the entire staff at Pointe Coupee Healthcare, and our special friend and mama's caregiver Ann Jarreau.
