Mary Lilian Snelgrove Welsh a resident of Baker and Baton Rouge died April 10, 2014 at Nottingham Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Baton Rouge. She was born on August 5, 1920 in a suburb of London, England. She attended schools there until entering wartime military service. Along with her parents, brother and others, she witnessed the horrors and havoc of enemy air raid bombings in WWII, as well as the hardships, heartaches and losses endured by so many in those frightening and uncertain times. She entered military service in early 1941, serving as teletype operator and instructor in the WAF, the woman's arm of the Royal Air Force (RAF) and was discharged therefrom in early 1945 as a Corporal. The teletype and typing skills, as well as the administrative experience gained and developed while in service, prepared her well for both employment and numerous social and school related activities after coming to the USA and ultimately to Baton Rouge in 1956. She retired from the Baton Rouge City Parish Planning Commission in 1993 after many years of dedicated service. She was preceded in death by her parents Percival and Lilian Snelgrove of London and Portsmouth, England, a brother Peter and a sister Ruth both of England, her son Russell Parker Welsh of Bastrop, Texas and a daughter Janine Welsh Ramirez of Bastrop Texas and Baton Rouge. She is survived by her son; Darrel Welsh and wife Barbara of Baton Rouge and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren throughout the USA, as well as nieces and nephews and their families in England. She was a longtime and faithful Choir member since 1963 and Lay Reader of Trinity Episcopal Church, Baton Rouge. A memorial service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, 3552 Morning Glory Ave., Baton Rouge, LA 70808 at 1:00pm Saturday, April 26, 2014 with a reception following in the church common Room.
