Funeral Services will be conducted for Mr. Gilbert Joseph Matherne, Sr., age 78, at 11:00 am Saturday, May 3, 2014 at Ourso Funeral Home with Pastor Terry Lobell officiating. Interment will follow at Hope Haven Cemetery in Gonzales. Visitation will be held from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm on Friday at Ourso Funeral Home. The funeral home will reopen at 9:00 am on Saturday and remain open until service time. A native of Bayou Gauche and resident of Gonzales, Mr. Matherne passed away at 6:28 pm on Monday, April 28, 2014 at his residence. Gilbert was born on October 8, 1935 to Blanche Badeaux Matherne and Henry Matherne. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Gilbert's family was his greatest joy. He was married to his wife of 61 years, Bertha Gisclair Matherne and he was retired from Saba Dredging Company where he worked for 47 years. He is survived by his sons, Gilbert J. Matherne, Jr. and wife Gwen, Bobby P. Matherne, Sr. and wife Brenda; daughters, Debra Ann Fox and husband Bradley, Peggy Ann Christen and husband Donald, Sr., Cheryl Dolly Ann Lowery, Terrie Lynn Bland and husband William, Karen Ann (KK) Matherne and companion Marc Marchand; sisters, Louise Matherne, Nolia Grow; brothers, Charles Matherne, Louis Matherne, Stanley Matherne, Sr., Wilfred Matherne, Sr., 14 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and son-in-laws, Archie Lowery, Jr. and Durel Du Doucet. Pallbearers will be Gilbert Matherne, III, Bobby Matherne, Jr., Joshua Matherne, Donald Christen, Jr., Michael Christen, Hayden Lowery, Matthew Freeman and Aaran McBride. The family would like to thank Jay and the staff at Amedysis Hospice for the excellent care given to Mr. Matherne.
