Marilyn Jane Carpenter Barnhart passed away Thursday, June 19, 2014, in Fort Worth, Texas, at the age of 76. She was born October 13, 1937, in Indianapolis, Indiana, graduated from Broad Ripple High School, and attended Butler University. She met Edward, the love of her life, and was married June 7, 1958. Due to Ed's naval career, they moved to Point Richmond, California, where she gave birth to her two children and worked at the University of California, Berkeley. They subsequently moved to Falls Church, Virginia, for another naval assignment, and she began her long career as a legal secretary. Longing to recapture the magic of their honeymoon, they returned to New Orleans in 1971 and again fell in love with the City and all its charms. Marilyn continued working in the legal field for several prominent law firms for over twenty-five years and then worked another ten years for close family friend Dr. Donald P. Bell. She moved to Fort Worth after Ed's passing to be with her daughter and granddaughter, who was the light of her later years. Marilyn joined the Krewe of Iris in 1974 and it became one of her greatest joys. She developed many lifelong friends and enjoyed participating in numerous Carnival balls, parades, and activities for thirty-five years. She had the privilege of serving as an Iris officer from 1985 until her retirement in 2009. She was a former member of Lake Vista United Methodist Church. Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband of forty-nine years, Edward F. Barnhart, and her brother, Robert A. Carpenter. She is survived by her daughter, Julia B. Gegenheimer, and husband, Gordon M. Gegenheimer; son, Daniel E. Barnhart; and granddaughter, Claire M. Gegenheimer. Relatives, friends, and members of the Krewe of Iris are invited to attend a visitation on Wednesday, June 25, 2014, from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m., followed by a funeral service at LAKE LAWN METAIRIE FUNERAL HOME, 5100 Pontchartrain Boulevard (in Metairie Cemetery). Interment will follow in Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum. To sign and view the Family Guestbook, please visit www.lakelawnmetairie.com.
