Paul Owen David, Jr., 82, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, passed away on July 18, 2014 at Baton Rouge General Hospital. P.O., oldest child of Violet Evelyn McCrory and Paul Owen David, was born in Foley, Florida, but spent most of his early life in Columbus, Georgia. At the age of sixteen he began working his way through college at the University of Georgia, later transferring to Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn University) where he earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He then volunteered for the United States Army and proudly served his country during the Korean conflict, after which he returned to Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn University) completing a degree in Business Administration. In 1956 he married Barbara Jane Ogletree. Accepting a position at Esso Standard Oil Company in 1958 he moved his family, including their first child Mark, to Baton Rouge; daughters Jane and Amy soon followed. While working at Esso he continued graduate studies at LSU and began building homes on the side under the tutelage of Andy Bittner, a fellow Esso engineer. It didn't take long for P.O. to realize that he enjoyed building and running his own business more than engineering, and he left Esso to start his long career in home building, real estate and land development. Although he owned or had interests in numerous corporations in Baton Rouge, including Sherwood Realty, he primarily operated under the name of P.O. David, Inc. and was very active in Baton Rouge during the 1960's, 1970's and early 1980's. After the death of his first wife, he married Donna Bolin in 1985, who has been his loving wife and constant companion for 29 years. P.O. was a charter member of Baton Rouge Home Builders Association and of the Baton Rouge Gun Club. He was also a longtime member of Hunters Run Gun Club in Port Allen. He enjoyed hunting and saltwater fishing in his earlier years and later became a competitive shooter in both skeet and trap. P.O. developed many friendships from shooting that extended long past his shooting days. He also enjoyed theatre, travelling, watching NFL and SEC sports, reading, good company, and good food. P.O. is survived by his wife Donna Bolin David, his brother James Britt David of Columbus, Georgia and sister Dorothy David Lathem of Corryton, Tennessee; his daughters Jane David Britton, Old Hickory, Tennessee and Joan K Danforth (f/k/a Amy Lenore David), Tuscan, Arizona; son Mark David and his wife Cynthia Sandel David and granddaughter Sara Victoria David of Orange Park, FL; step-daughter Kelly Dillard Haskin, her husband Randy and their children Kyle, Nicholas, and Hannah Haskin of Cary, NC. He was "Papa" to Sara, and "Pa O" to Kyle, Nick and Hannah. Preceded in death by his parents, Paul Owen and Violet Evelyn David, and by his first wife Barbara Ogletree David. A celebration of his life is scheduled for July 21, 2014, at 11:00 am, at Rabenhorst East, Baton Rouge. Visitation from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that donations be made to the American Heart Association or the Wounded Warrior Project. He was a good man. We will always carry his memory in our hearts.
