William Black Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 15 to Jan. 19, 2018.

William P. Black, Sr. of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 10th, 2018 in the presence of his family and comfort of his home. Bill was born in 1929, in Haileyville, Oklahoma to Harvey and Amelia Black. He had two older brothers, Jim & Bob. He graduated from Classen High School, attended Oklahoma A&M, then earned a degree in speech with a minor in history from Arkansas College. While studying in the foothills of the Ozarks, he met his college sweetheart, Elma. The two married in April, 1952, and shared an amazing love for each other for 65 years. They were the proud parents to three children- Ann, Bucky, and Ginger. Bill honorably served in the United States Army during the Korean War era. An entertainer at heart, he traveled as an emcee and performer, boosting troop morale across the country. In 1955, Bill and Elma moved to Baton Rouge where he started his career as a broadcaster and television entertainer. That same year, he created the beloved children's family program, "Storyland", and shortly after, "The Buckskin Bill Show". The shows ran for 35 years, which at the time, were the longest running children's family programs in the nation. Education was the foundation of his programs. Bill worked tirelessly, utilizing the shows' popularity, to bring about improvements in the community. This included assisting in the creation of the Baton Rouge Zoo, promotion of the Louisiana School for the Deaf, and advocacy for the Boy Scouts of America, just to name a few. For his works in television, Bill was twice awarded the "Best Children's Show in the United States" by the National Association of Broadcasters. He was also awarded the coveted Action for Children's Television Award. For his selfless contributions to the Baton Rouge community, Bill was the recipient of the Golden Deeds Award. Bill was a relentless student. While enjoying his time as an instructor for the LSU Journalism Department, he enrolled in courses, always looking to further his education. He continued to show his love for children and the importance of education by serving on the EBR Parish School Board for sixteen years. Though Bill and Elma were most recently members of Broadmoor United Methodist Church, they initially raised their family at University Presbyterian Church, where Bill served on numerous boards and committees. He gave the congregation the gift of his beloved children's sermons, always poignant and humorous. Bill and Elma cherished their monthly supper club gatherings with life-long friendships created at UPC. Bill's greatest joy was being "Pawpaw" to his and Elma's six grandchildren, who gave them many new adventures. Bill loved surf fishing especially for "specks" in Cocodrie, cheering for the Saints, and all things LSU…though he was still a proud "Okie" married to an "Arkie." Although Elma was known for her beautiful flower beds, Bill took pride growing citrus trees and his vegetable garden. Bill also enjoyed playing and singing hymns on the piano and was known to belt out favorites such as "In the Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross." Bill's one-of-a-kind personality, love for storytelling, and gift of humor will be fondly remembered by all who met him. Bill is preceded in death by his wife, Elma K. Black, parents, Harvey M. & Amelia P. Black, and siblings, James H. Black & Robert Black. He is survived by his children, Ann Posey, William Jr. "Bucky" and Maggie Black, and Ginger and Chris Musso. He is also survived by grandchildren, Kelli and Adam Jennings, Shelley Posey, Rachel and Tyler Loupe, Megan Musso, William and Stephanie Black, Raymond Black, and one great-grandchild, Tristan Lee. Bill is also survived by his very special brother-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews. A celebration of Bill's life will be held on Friday, January 19, 2018, at Broadmoor United Methodist Church. Visitation will begin at 10:00am, memorial service at noon, and reception to follow. A private burial will be held for immediate family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to organizations close to Bill's heart- Louisiana School for the Deaf, Raven's Outreach Center for Homeless Veterans, or Broadmoor United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.

When I talked with my sister today, she told me Buck Skin Bill had passed. I can remember being a poor child along with my siblings in South Baton Rouge, we would save our penny's so we could walk to channel 9 and give our pennies to help by Penny the Elephant". Mr Black was instrumental in getting an elephant for the Zoo. We loved watching him and marching around our house as he did. He left a legacy behind and will be remembered for his wisdom and putting smiles on our faces when we needed it. RIP

Many good memories of the TV shows, the music, the Little Rascals. And UPC children's sermons--It was forever a shock that he cut off his tie on Easter Sundays. Later he sat with my dad, Paul Burns, on the back pew and they lamented the loss of the singing of the good old hymns. A great entertainer, a true and committed advocate for children, and a humble man. Thank you.

Thank you, Buckskin Bill for the many wonderful memories of my childhood. Growing up in a family of six children, we couldn't wait for your show to come on and especially Monday mornings as we'd all grab whatever remotely resembled a baton and march around our tiny living room. And NO ONE compared to you when it came to reading a story. May you rest in eternal peace.

As a child I looked forward to watching Buckskin Bill's Storyland. As an adult I came across Mr. Black on Sherwood Forest Blvd. and he wasn't smiling. As he would say "You're never completely dressed until you put on a smile", I had him roll down his window and spoke that phase to him. Needless to say he couldn't help but fall out laughing. Thank GOD for "Buckskin Bill" Black.

Thanks for all of the little life lessons Buckskin. Like keeping your rod tip down when surf fishing in a thunderstorm. Some would have called it natural selection, but you said you were just buying me time to grow a brain. Robin and Joe are in the surf waiting on you. Going to miss you buddy.

Our Great City and State has lost a wonderful man and Friend to all. He taught so many of us as children, right from wrong and, entertained us year after year as Buckskin Bill. Those memories will follow us the rest of our lives. We all mourn this great loss and extend our deepest condolences to his Family in their time of loss. May God bless Buckskin Bill Black. His legacy will live on for all time to come.

I only met Buckskin Bill three times in my life, twice as a child putting pennies in a bucket on his beloved afternoon show. As an adult, I had the privilege of speaking with him when he was a member of the East Baton Rouge Parish public school system. Some of the fondest memories many of us have are returning from school, throwing your books in the corner, grabbing a snack, and sitting down for 30 minutes and watching his afternoon show before running outside to play sports. The "Monday Morning March" will be forever associated with him. Who gave more to Baton Rouge? We are a much poorer community without him. RIP. And remember, "you're never completely dressed until you put on a smile."

Omg upon finding out on the news my husband and I danced and sung the Monday morning march and reflected on all the wonderful memories of all the songs , stories ,and lessons that were learned ,and preaching to our kids the value of life and caring people. It makes me sad to watch shows today with no lessons , no value, total disrespect for mankind. I'm proud to have come from an ara when we could hold our heads high and be proud of where we came from and not have to worry about the things people worry about today. Be ptoud Black Family cherish the memories always .

Thank you for hours of joy when I was sick. I marched w/ Buckskin Bill, when I was 5 and younger, holding my wooden spoon in the air. Before Sesame Street we had Buckskin Bill w/ Pepo Peto and "Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel." I read that book with my children! Then one day, I realized that the Monday Morning March was "The March of the Tin Soldiers?" What great memories of Brownies and Cub Scouts, and pennies for Penny the Elephant!

Sorry for a great historian passing of a great man who helped children in the Baton Rouge and surrounding areas of the WAFB channel 9 broadcast. Well when I was young we all new him as Bucskin Bill. Every morning we new the Monday morning March was ready at 8:00 am. We where taught how to count, learn our ABC's. The cartoon was great. But the highlight of it was to be on the show. Being a Cub scout of pack 444 under Mr. Jones at Greater New Guide B.C. 800 North 19th Street was very interesting. Thanks to Mr. Black for his guidance you gave to all the children of old Capitol Avenue Elementary Scholl that was on 42nd Street off of Gus Young Avenue (formerly Capitol Avenue). Our prayers goes out to his family.

To say we'll miss you is an understatement. Fourteen years ago we became neighbors. Later we heard we lived next door to Buckskin Bill. I was very excited to be living next to a celebrity. My husband was excited to meet Buckskin Bill again since he had marched with him on one of his shows@age 9. But past the celebrity part was a man who would light up a room when he entered , his laughter was contagious. He and Elma welcomed us into the neighborhood, Elma always bringing bowls of fruit, beautiful flowers from her garden. They were both a joy to visit. We are saddened with your passing but now you're with your college sweetheart Elma. May God hold your family tight in His adoring way, give them comfort. You're home now in your forever BUCKSKIN BILL suit ..Give Elma a big hug for us. Love & miss you.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family. "Buckskin Bill" was a great man. He made people smile wherever he went. I was on his show when I was a kid and he was just the nicest man. He did much for his community. He had a big heart. We were lucky to have him here on earth the time we did and now God will enjoy him in heaven. If you hear thunder on Monday mornings, they are doing the "Monday morning march"! Thanks Mr. Bill for giving us all some great memories! God bless your family. You will be missed!!

It was with grad sadness that I learned of the passing of our beloved Buckskin Bill. Such treasured memories. He always reminded me of my Dad. So kind, sweet and patient. I grew up in the late 50s, so I felt he was my own special friend. My sisters and I did the Monday morning march regularly, getting out the metal spoons and pots to bang while walking in a circle. I met him in Albertsons, probably over a decade ago, and didn't hesitate to stop and introduce myself and tell him how much he meant to my generation. He smiled while I told him about participating in the penny collection and Monday morning march, just like he'd never heard it before. He will be dearly missed, but fondly remembered. God's blessings on his family, and we pray for peace and comfort at this time.

Thank you "Buckskin Bill" for all those years. Gary & Michele Dupuy

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
