A retired employee with South Central Bell, he died Tuesday, March 29, 2011, at Baton Rouge General Medical Center-Bluebonnet. He was 59, a resident of Baton Rouge and native of New Orleans. Visiting at Hartzell United Methodist Church, 15630 Live Oak St., Rosedale, Thursday, April 7, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Religious service at the church Friday, April 8, at 11 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Ulysses Stephens. Interment in Rose Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, Rosedale. Survived by his wife, Betty Pryer Anderson; mother, Helen H. Anderson; daughter, Brandi Anderson; son, Melvin A. Anderson Jr. and fiancée Zamora James; sons he reared, Melvin James, Kenneth Sims and Marcus Clayton; two sisters, Debra Anderson, and Tammy and spouse Steven Lewis; sister-in-law, Dorothy Anderson; brother, Larry Sr. and spouse Donna Anderson; a host of nieces, nephews, friends and other relatives; grandchild, Mason M. Martin; aunts, Molly Pate and Rosa Neff; and special friends, Clarence Sr. and Hattie Pryer, Lawrence Northern, Walter Smith and Joseph Dupree. Special thanks to the staff on the fourth floor at Baton Rouge General Medical Center-Bluebonnet and caregiver Robin Thomas. Mel was a 1969 graduate of Thomas A. Levy and attended Southern University in computer science. He was a choir member, lay speaker, former chairman of the Pastor Parish Relations Committee, Sunday school leader and trustee.
