Melvyn Safer Obituary

Melvyn I. Safer passed away Saturday, April 6, 2013, in Houston. He was 79, a native of Montgomery, Ala., and resident of Clear Lake City, Texas. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Minette Louis Safer; and parents, A.R. and Sarah L. Safer. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Shirley L. Safer; daughters, Vicki Safer, of Bayview, Texas, and Tammy S. Allison and husband John Allison, of Friendswood, Texas; grandchildren, Jeffrey Allison and Shelby Allison, both of Friendswood, Texas; and brothers, David L. Safer, of Baton Rouge, and Jerome J. Safer, of Birmingham, Ala. Mel was a graduate of Baton Rouge High School in 1951 and LSU in 1955 with a B.S. in Commerce. He started his own insurance agency in 1963, and it was one of the largest in the Clear Lake area. He was a pilot, having served for eight years of active duty in the Air Force, and retired from the Air National Guard in 1979 with the rank of Major. He will be buried on Tuesday, April 9, at 10 a.m. at Elmwood Memorial Cemetery in Abilene, Texas, with full military honors. Pallbearers will be military. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the charity of your choice.

So sorry to hear of Mel's death. He was a treasure and a good hearted man. We will miss him and remember him fondly.

I used Mel Safer many years for my insurance needs in Clear Lake and he always took care of my needs. He was also a great friend to my kids and their sports activities. He was such a fine gentleman.
