A retired teacher with the East Baton Rouge Parish School System, she died Thanksgiving morning at 2:21 a.m., November 28, 2013, two days short of her 83rd birthday at the Hospice Butterfly Wing of the Baton Rouge General Hospital. A lifelong resident of Baton Rouge, she was born November 30, 1930. Betty Jane was a graduate of St. Joseph's Academy. She continued her pursuit of knowledge and graduated with a degree in education from Louisiana State University in 1951. She began teaching at the age of 21 in 1954. She received her Masters in Education degree from Louisiana State University and married her sweetheart the same year. She received her +30 at Southeastern Louisiana University. She loved learning and teaching others. Many tales have been told from her years at Broadmoor Elementary and the many children she impacted. She was instrumental in directing the school plays, coordinating school carnivals, planning field trips and managing the student crossing guards. In 1977, she was chosen as the Elementary Teacher of the Year for East Baton Rouge Parish School System. Betty Jane was a member and contributor to many organizations. She was a member of the Bengal Belles, L.S.U. Alumni Club, Tiger Athletic Foundation, and Woman's Club. She was the former secretary of the Retired Teachers Association and belonged to Delta Kappa Gamma education sorority, Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi and the Beta Iota Chapter Alpha Xi Delta Fraternity. She was generous in contributing to St. Louis King of France Catholic Church, St. Joseph's Academy, March of Dimes, Salvation Army, St. Jude Children Research Hospital, the Sheriff's Association and many others. Betty Jane was a wonderful, caring woman with many interests. She loved watching the Winter Olympics, Macy Day parades, PBS, cheering on the Pittsburg Steelers and L.S.U. In 1951, Betty Jane was crowned the Queen of Romany and a breathtaking queen she was. She was well traveled and loved sharing stories of her travels to all fifty states, Canada, Mexico, Germany and England. Betty Jane learned to tap dance as a young girl and is fondly remembered tap dancing around the house. She was quick to smile, and didn't meet a stranger. She was compassionate about education and generous in supporting others in their quest for furthering their own education. She will be greatly missed, but always lovingly remembered. She is survived by her son, Clint Thomas Heard and his wife Sandy, her children, Desti and Nick Shepard; sister Junie Baudin Bordelon and husband Laury "Whitey" Bordelon residing in Sevierville, TN, brother Ewell "Whip" Baudin of Baton Rouge, sister in law Natalie Heard Elbourne and Jim, Cindy Heard Thomas and Pat, brother in law retired Col. Wayne Heard and Hilde, numerous nieces and nephews, friends, education colleagues and former students. Preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, John (Johnny) Clinton Heard, Jr., son Mark Baudin Heard, parents Isabelle and A.E. Baudin and mother in law and father in law, Pearl and John Clinton Heard, Sr. Pallbearers will be Gary Elbourne, Don Elbourne, Sr., Aaron Thomas, Remi Lapointe, Jean-Marc Lapointe, Nick Shepard and Dustin Mitchell. Honorary pallbearers are L.J. "Whitey" Bordelon, retired Col. Wayne Heard, Jim Elbourne, Pat Thomas and Ted Varnado. Visitation will be at Greenoaks Funeral Home on Saturday, November 30, 2013 from 9:00 am until the funeral service begins at 12:00 pm. Interment will follow at Greenoaks Memorial Park.
