Surrounded by family and friends, Stephen Warner Speeg passed away peacefully on March 12, 2020 at the age of 62. A long-term resident of Baton Rouge, he was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He attended St. Mary Magdalen elementary school and Rummel High School in Metairie where he excelled at wrestling and baseball. He graduated from Southeastern Louisiana University and completed his Doctorate of Medicine at Louisiana State University Health Science Center New Orleans. He completed a combined residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at Earl K. Long Medical Center. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend who will be fondly remembered by those he touched. Steve will be remembered for his larger than life personality and sense of humor. He dedicated his life to serving others as a physician for over 30 years. Medicine was his calling and his passion and he enjoyed taking care of the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of his patients. As clinical instructor of internal medicine at Earl K Long Hospital he mentored and trained resident physicians. During his career he was Chief of Staff and chairman of the quality assurance committee at Lane Regional Medical Center, Medical Director of St. Joseph Hospice, and held numerous other leadership roles. Steve believed in the dignity of life and that led him to ministry through hospice. His other interests included fishing, hunting, boating, traveling, and spending time with his grandchildren. Stephen is survived by his wife of forty-one years, Donna Tranchina Speeg; his four children: Jeremy Speeg (Emily), Shannon Speeg Brown (Ken), Kristen Speeg Lazarine (Robbie), and Alyssa Speeg. Grandchildren: Cecilia, Davis, Eloise, Genevieve and Miller Speeg, Olivia Brown, Luke and Addison Lazarine; his sister, Shirley Bourgere' (Daniel); sister-in-law Patricia Speeg; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father and mother, Davis and Virginia Speeg; his brother, Raymond Speeg. Visiting hours will take place at Resthaven Funeral Home on Sunday, March 15, 2020 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM with the rosary at 5:00 PM. Visitation will be at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church on Monday, March 16, 2020 from 10:00 AM Until Mass of Christian Burial at 12 PM. Burial will follow at Resthaven Gardens of Memory. In lieu of flowers please consider donations in Stephen's name to Cypress Springs Mercedarian Prayer Center, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, Dr. Oliver Sartor's Cancer Research Fund at Tulane Cancer Center, or St. Joseph Hospice/The Carpenter House. The family of Stephen wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the physicians and staff at OLOL Regional Medical Center, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, St. Joseph Hospice and the Carpenter House. Also, they'd like to express their gratitude for the compassionate and loving care from Dr. Kent Rhodes, Dr. Mark Posner, Dr. Bryan Bienvenu, Dr. Maurice King, the staff at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer center, Dr. Oliver Sartor and the entire Tulane Cancer Center staff. Finally, the family would like to thank Sr. Dulce for her continued spiritual guidance throughout Steve's journey. My thoughts and prayers are with Donna and the family during this time of great sorry. I am a nurse and I worked along side Speeg when he was a resident at EKL and then became a staff member. He treated everyone he encountered with kindness and the utmost respect. He was always joking around and fun to work with. He was also my boys Pediatrician. He was always there when the boys needed him. He will be missed!

Dr. Speeg was our doctor for about 30 years (starting with my daughter when she was 6 months old, myself, my son, my first grandson, and my parents). He always treated my family as if we were his family. He always knew when something was wrong, and addressed it before we left even if I was not the patient that day. He was so good with the children. He genuinely loved each one of them and they knew it. He also took good care of my dad when he was sick and even came to the visitation when he passed away. He was still taking care of my mom up until he got sick. He was a very caring and extremely knowledgeable physician with compassion for all those who needed him. He was the best doctor ever! We truly loved him and are so sorry for your loss. Thank you all for sharing him with us. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this difficult time.

To all the Speeg family, it is with wonderful childhood memories that I recall Miss Ginny, Mr. Dave, Ricky,Shirley and Steve. Our family, the Heughan's, lived 5 houses down on Melanie Ave. in Airline Park. We are Margaret, Vernon, Vickie and Alan. As kids we all played together for so many years until we grew up and went separate ways. I became a nurse and worked at EKL hospital where I would occasionally run into Steve. Such a small world. Many of my friends had him as their doctor and I know he was much loved and respected. I will always remember his winning smile and friendly personality. He will be missed by so many.
God bless,

I went to SLU with Dr. Speeg and lived in Cardinal Newman Hall with him. Years later when I learned that my sister-in-law was a patient of Dr. Speeg, I told her, on her next appointment, to ask him many personal questions and gave her the information she would need. He got concerned and asked if she was having him investigated. Then she let him off the hook and told him that she was my sister-in-law. She said he laughed and told her that it brought back many memories of his college days and playing with the Haze.

I met Steve and Donna when they were dating and we were all students at SLU. He was gregarious, always smiling and laughing. Great guy, everyone's friend. What a wonderful, full, happy and giving life that he had! Gone too soon but never forgotten. May the family find healing and strength through Jesus's warm embrace and through recognizing a life well lived.

I met Steve in elementary school playing basketball against each other, he was a warrior. We went to ARHS together and I remember Steve as a prince of a guy, always jovial, willing to help and good to everyone. Steve was a very good baseball player and wrestler. Steve and Donna went to SLU as did my wife Susan and I. We saw them occasionally and what struck us was their devotion to each other and genuine happiness. As Steve moved on in his career in Baton Rouge I did not see him much but based upon the comments from others that I read he was always the same genuine "Price of a Guy". My condolences to his family and friends. The World was a BETTER place with Steve in it, because he made it BETTER. Thank God Almighty HE WAS A RAIDER. Olin Kropog ARHSClass 75

Steve was a wonderful doctor and friend and I am sure he was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. I am so sorry that he has left us so soon. He will be sorely missed by all of us. There are a lot of good doctors in the clinic, but no one can take Steves place. He had my complete trust. He was also a great friend and I could tell him anything. To his family, I would like to say how very, very sorry I am for your loss. I know Steve is flying high in the presence of our Lord. I pray that you find some comfort in this.
