Tolor White Obituary

Tolor Edgar White Sr. was born in Liberty, Mississippi and a resident of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He entered into the arms of his heavenly Father on July 13, 2019 at the age of 85.999. He was married to his childhood sweetheart Oranell Smith for 61 years. He served the United States of America as a soldier during the Korean War in the United States Army 24th Infantry Division, Military Police (MP). He was honorably discharged at the rank of Sergeant. He received the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation. He served the State of Louisiana as an employee of the Southern University System. "Mr. White" was intelligent, responsible, and a man of detail. When recently asked by the nurse at the hospital his pain level on a scale from 1 to 10, he paused, thought and responded, "about a 7.5." Known for his quote, "one second at a time," he went on to retire with 55 years of service. He was named Vice President for Finance and Business Affairs and Comptroller Emeritus of the Southern University System and received an Honorary Doctorate of Business in 2010. Arrangements: Greenoaks Funeral Home.

One of my greatest mentors for all time was "Mr. White". Mr. White gave me my first secretarial job in the comptroller's Office in June 1970. I requested him to speak at my Retirement June 2009. I met "Mr. White" when Mr. McClinton hired me as a student worker when I enrolled at Southern University in 1970. When the semester was over Mr. White hired me at his front desk when his secretary retired. It was the best years of my life as a secretary and I will never forget him. So with sadness in heart for so great a loss, I ask the Lord to watch over his family and get them through this difficult time. Family you have my deepest sympathy.

Mr. White will always be remembered as a wise Godly man of patience, precision, intellect and wit -many of the characteristics we often find sorely lacking. Praying that God continues to bless you richly, and especially now with His strength, comfort and peace.

I considered Tolor a good friend. We had many discussions about things other than finance. I always appreciated his candor and honesty about racism and thought how beneficial it would be if more people could speak to each other with honesty and openess about it. Though I had not seen him in many years I will miss him. To this day, I still repeat some of the truly profound things he said to me during our visits so I carry his legacy with me.
