Fred B. Alexander Jr., 62, departed this life Sunday, Oct. 31, 2010, at his home in North Potomac, Md., after a lengthy battle with cancer. Fred was the only child of Fred B. Alexander Sr. and Clara Joubert Alexander, of Alexandria, both of whom preceded him in death. A native of Alexandria, Fred attended Alexandria public schools and graduated from Peabody High School. He continued his education at LSU, earning a bachelor of science degree in political science with a concentration in Russian studies in 1970. A ROTC commissioned officer and distinguished military graduate, Fred served in the Army for five years, achieving an honorable discharge in June 1975. Fred entered the financial services marketplace in 1975 with The Travelers. During the next 20 years, he enjoyed progressive career growth. During his tenure with The Travelers, he recruited and trained new life agents, as well as experienced brokerage general agents. In 1995, Fred joined Salomon Smith Barney, where he served as an estate planning and insurance specialist, providing estate plans and speaking at client seminars. At the pinnacle of his career, Fred retired as the national sales director, Institution Distribution Group at Protective Life, December 2009. Survived by his devoted wife of 40 years, Joyce Toles Alexander; a son, Chad Alexander and daughter-in-law, Rosemary Abbasi Alexander, of Washington, D.C.; two sisters-in-law, Patricia Toles, Baton Rouge, and Gwen Green, Inglewood, Calif.; three brothers-in-law, Howard Louis, Baton Rouge, Keith Green, Inglewood, and Clifford Toles, Oakland, Calif.; as well as a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral and interment will take place in Gaithersburg, Md., where Fred and his family have resided more than 35 years. Memorial donations may be designated in Fred's memory to The .
