Jane Colten Obituary

Jane Kimmel Colten, formerly of Baton Rouge, passed away peacefully among family members on November 12, 2013 in Frankfort, Kentucky. Born in DuQuoin, Illinois in 1923 to Roberta Pyatt Kimmel and Maurice Edward Kimmel, she grew up with her sibling Joe Robert Kimmel and attended school in DuQuoin, before graduating from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. After marrying A. Thomas Colten of Detroit, Michigan in 1947 she lived in Indianapolis, Indiana until 1948. She moved to Bogalusa, Louisiana in 1948 and then relocated to Minden, Louisiana in 1956. It was there she raised her three children, Connie, Craig Edward, and Lee Arthur. During her time in Minden, she was active in the Presbyterian Church, civic clubs, and founded a Girl Scout organization. In 1976 she moved to Baton Rouge. While in the state capital, she remained active in the church, helped found a retreat and conference center in the Florida Parishes, and participated in an international book exchange program that recycled books to readers in developing countries. She also was active in establishing a two-party political system in Louisiana. In 1993, she moved to Frankfort, Kentucky to be near her son Lee, his wife Mariana and her three grand children, Ian Kimmel, Nathaniel Joseph, and Rosemary Elizabeth. Throughout her life she excelled as a homemaker. She also was an avid gardener, a skilled seamstress, and loved to read, bake, and cook. She was an intrepid traveler, visiting most of the states, plus Asia, Europe, Latin America, and Africa. She is survived by her three children and three grandchildren, Jean Kimmel of Kansas City, Kay Colten of South Bend, Indiana, Richard and Elizabeth Colten of Upper Saddle River, New Jersey. Services will be held on Saturday December 14 at 1pm at the S. Frankfort Presbyterian Church, 224 Steel St., Frankfort, Kentucky 40601.
