Richard Ashby Obituary

He was a devoted son, husband, father, and grandfather. A long-time resident of Baton Rouge, LA, living in Conroe, TX following the flood of 2016, passed away peacefully at his home shortly after his 90th birthday, surrounded by family, on Sunday, January 7, 2018. Richard was born and reared in New Orleans, LA. He graduated from St. Aloysius High School and after serving in the Navy at the end of World War II, attended Tulane University where he graduated with a degree in chemistry. A job with Ethyl Corporation took him to Baton Rouge where he met and married Janis and lived happily for 57 years. He was an active member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church for 53 years and attended annual Manresa retreats starting in high school. Richard loved history, art, travel, and gardening, but most of all he loved family. He shared these interests with his children, grandchildren, nephews, nieces, and friends--particularly his love of annual family trips to Gatlinburg to see the fall colors and hike in the Smokey Mountains. He was also a man of integrity and perseverance. His favorite quote was Winston Churchill's, "Never give up. Never, never give up." Richard is survived by his loving wife Janis, who tenderly cared for him during his bout with Parkinson's disease; sons, Mark and wife, Karin of Dallas, Kevin and wife, Amy of Conroe; daughter, Kathy and husband, Fazahl of Miami; grandchildren, Brooke, Martina, Alexxis, Spencer, Sage, Gabriella and Marie; brother, Eugene and wife, Carolyn. He is preceded in death by his parents, Anthony Ashby and Ida Bruno; sister, Suzanne Learn and her husband, Bill; and infant grandson Chazz Ashby. Pall bearers are: Steve Ashby, Christopher Learn, Spencer Ashby, Ryan Empson, Jim Guitreau and Andrew Guitreau. Honorary pall bearers are: Ray Guitreau, Nelson Hebert, Aubrey Young (deceased), Richard Empson, Thomas Daggett, Wagner Perrault, and Tom Allen. Visitation will be held at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 11411 Goodwood Blvd., Baton Rouge, LA, on Friday, January 12, 2018, from 10:00AM until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00AM. Burial will immediately follow at Greenoaks Memorial Park. Family and friends may sign the online guestbook or leave a personal note to the family at www.greenoaksfunerals.com.

Mark,

I was very sad to hear of your dad's passing. All of us growing up at STM knew him, plain and simply, as a good guy...always interested in what we were doing, and caring genuinely about his family. Those traits were easy to spot when he spoke in his usual, quiet tone. We should all hope to have the same things said about us someday.

Finally, my fond memories of your dad wouldn't be complete without mentioning his famous Volkswagen Beetle in the driveway, and the vacation destination stickers on the station wagon. Unforgettable and priceless.

To you and to your entire family, please accept my deepest sympathy.

Donny
