James Bennett Obituary

Jay passed away peacefully on Friday, March 2nd, at the age of 84. He was born September 7th, 1933, in Melville, La., to Phillip M. And Helen Valin Bennett, and lived in St. Francisville, La., since the age of 4. He leaves behind his three children, Michael and wife Becky, Bill and wife Margery, and Leigh Anne Bennett Jones and husband Butch. He was Poppa to: Waylan Bennett (Alisha), Adie Bennett Par (Greg), Will Bennett (Chelsea), Bennett Jones (Amy), Jennifer Jones Prados (Michael), Mallorie Bennett Settle (Preston), and Laurel Bennett, along with 12 great-grandchildren. Survived by his brothers Charles R. "Choo Choo" Bennett; and sisters: Shirley Hicks of Baton Rouge, Dodie Charlet of Zachary, Helen B. "Ruthie" Davis (Randy); his brother in law Billy Honeycutt (Emily); and his lab Skip, his best friend. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years Anne Honeycutt Bennett; sisters: Martha Senter, Irma Bryant, Betty Rinaudo, and brother Morris Bennett. After serving as a Sergeant in the US Marine Corps in the Korean Conflict, he returned home to St. Francisville where he became a long-time successful West Feliciana businessman. He owned and operated Bennett's Super Service and later Bennett Ford Inc. He also served as a member and past president of the West Feliciana Police Jury. He was an avid LSU Baseball fan and a member of the LSU Coaches Committee. He served as the president of the West Feliciana Hunting Club for many years. His greatest joy in life was entertaining his family and friends at his camp on the Mississippi River in Cat Island. Here he enjoyed teaching his grandchildren and others to hunt, cook, and the value of hard work. If ever there was a man who exemplified the meaning of "true grit," it was James Wallace "Popcorn" Bennett! Visitation will be at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, St. Francisville on Monday, March 5, 2018, from 9am until Mass of Christian Burial at 11am. Pallbearers: Waylan Bennett, Will Bennett, James C. Bennett, Don Charlet, Randy Davis, Rad Hicks, Elbert Jones, and Sam Rosso. Honorary Pallbearers: Robert Daniel, Edward "Doonie" Johnson, Captain Bennett Jones, Sammy Patrick, Francis Rinaudo, Mike Zeringue, also including all past and present members of the West Feliciana Hunting Club. My dad and I are saddened by J.W.'s passing . He was one of a kind and he was a great baseball buddy . We had some good times watching LSU Baseball together for all these years. Our prayers are with all of J.W.'s family as they they prepare to say their final good-bye's. Rest well J.W. Your beautiful life on Earth has ended, job WELL DONE!! We know you are together in heaven with your family , but most of all your beautiful wife .
