Bettie Lane Obituary

On March 5, 2018, Bettie Jean Cadzow Lane transitioned peacefully from this life to the next. Her husband of 67 years, George Moseley Lane, has waited patiently for her arrival for 7 years. Joining George in the homecoming celebration will be Al and Grace Pokorny, Mickey and John Barksdale, and Dot and Fred Lane, along with all the many friends and family members she cherished and missed dearly. Bettie was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on July 27, 1925, and she was very proud up her birthplace. Even though she moved away when she married in 1944, she always called New Orleans home. Bettie took the job of wife and mother seriously, having a hot breakfast on the table every morning at 6:00 am (even in the summer) and a balanced dinner (with vegetables) on the table at 6:00 pm every evening. In between, she had time for bridge, bowling, garden club, church clubs, home room mother (every year), tutoring at Broadmoor Elementary, and teaching the kids in the neighborhood how to play poker. She was an enthusiastic member of the Caledonia Society of Baton Rouge. Bettie and George loved to travel, and when George retired in 1984, they planned a three month trip to the United Kingdom, most of the time spent in Scotland, the country of her ancestors. They searched for and found some bricks that had been part of the Cadzow Castle in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire. But Bettie was most excited about finding members of the Cadzow family, which was part of the Hamilton Clan. Upon arrival in a village or town, Bettie reached for the phone directory and scoured its contents looking for the Cadzow name. When she successfully discovered a "cousin," she would call to introduce herself. Without exception, these calls resulted in an invitation to tea and a discussion of the family tree. Bettie is survived by a son, George Moseley Lane Jr, a daughter, Ruth Lane Bass, and a grandson, Matthew Marston Lane (The Golden Child) and his girlfriend, Bolormaa Vandanmagsar. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Patsy Lane Kelley of Gallatin, Tennessee and many nieces, nephews, grands, great grands and great great grands, but was especially close to Pattie Suddarth of Gallatin, Tennessee, Peggy Shaw of Houston, Texas, Bill and Kathy Shaw of Blanco, Texas, and Clarke Cadzow of Baton Rouge. In addition, Bettie received the unexpected joy of having step-grandchildren, Pat and Angela Quint of Port Allen, Ken and Lisa Bass of Austin, Texas and Mike and Sandy Bass of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and step-great-grandchildren Meghan, Emily, and Ryan Quint, Stephen, Kyle, Tori, and Emme Bass and Catherine Bass Watts (J.R.), Sarah Bass Madden (Sean), Anne Bass Duncan (Bradley), and Patrick Bass, and the first of the next generation, step-great-great-grandson, Camden Watts. An important part of her extended family was John and Cindy Barksdale, Shannon and Alex Mahon, Lauren and Carter Hill, Kelsey Dukes, and Adam Barksdale, who will forever live in our hearts, and all the sweet Barksdale grandchildren, McKinley, McCoy, Palmer, Monroe, Weston, and Maizie. Special thanks to Millie Cudd who has been of invaluable service and support for many years, but especially for the last six months and to the staff at St. James Place, especially Shonell Riley, D'Angela Cooper, and Pamela Coleman, who provided compassionate and loving care. Services will be held at Broadmoor United Methodist Church at 11:00 am on Friday, March 9, 2018. Visitation begins at 10:00 am at the church, with a reception to be held following the service. Arrangements by Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd.
