Gail Pryor Obituary

Gail Ann Erickson Pryor passed away at at home on Thursday, May 24, 2018, at the age of 81 due to complications of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Gail was the beloved wife of Dr. William A. Pryor, who survives her, as do her children: Mark Schroeder and his wife Mary of Houston, Texas and their children Anna of Brooklyn, New York, John and Margaret of Houston; Susan Ferris and her husband Tim of Alexandria, Virginia and her son Daniel Guillory also of Alexandria; and, Eric Schroeder and his wife Denise of Baton Rouge and their children Camille of London, England, Marit of New York, New York, Caroline and Ben of Baton Rouge. Gail is also survived by her brother Charles Erickson and his wife Caroline of Burnsville, Minnesota and her sister Judith Bach and her husband Steve of Shorewood, Wisconsin, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Charles and Wilhelmina Erickson of Manitowoc, Wisconsin. A memorial service will be held at St. Alban's Chapel on Saturday, June 23, 2018 at 2:00 pm. A long-time resident of Baton Rouge, Gail participated in, and supported many organizations, and was one of the original founders of Paper N Things, but her greatest loves were her family, friends, entertaining, cooking and gardening. An accomplished cook, Gail was never happier than when she was doing just that for others. A generous and devoted friend to many, Gail was known for leaving anything from her baked goods to flowers to small gifts on numerous doorsteps just to let her friends know they were in her thoughts. A proud grandmother, Gail delighted in attending, and often participating in, the school activities of her eight grandchildren. Gail loved travelling and highlights included taking her entire family to Tuscany to celebrate her 70th birthday. She also enjoyed trips to New York City with her daughter and daughters-in-law to enjoy shopping, dining and attending shows. Each of her grandchildren enjoyed a trip with her during their eighth grade year to a destination of their choosing. She will be greatly missed. The family wishes to thank Gail's devoted caregivers: Liz Dial, Maria Dickerson, Angel Fieldings, Krishetta Moore, Reginald Moore, Rufus Sheppard, Rita Turner, and especially Margaret Venegas who has been by her side during her entire illness. Our thanks also to The Hospice of Baton Rouge for their care and comfort during Gail's final weeks. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Gail's memory to either St. Alban's Chapel, 5261 Highland Road, PMB 376, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70808-6547 or The Hospice of Baton Rouge, 3600 Florida Boulevard, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70806.

Not sure what to say?

Dr. Pryor, Eric, Judith, and all of Mrs. Pryor's children and grandchildren in whom she took such pleasure and pride, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. It is a huge loss. I only learned of it on August 2nd.

Mrs. Pryor was a woman of such intelligence, grace, generosity, thoughtfulness, wisdom, humor, and the kind of physical beauty that can only occur as a refraction through a beautiful inner soul. With her warm voice and caring actions, she made the world a better and more beautiful place for me and, I imagine, for anyone with whom she came in contact.

Please know that the calm and gentle impact of her being lives on in many of us and that I am thinking of you all.

I live next door to Gail's home in College Town. As the disease increasingly took her prisoner and our interactions declined, I missed them. Over the last year or so, as even telephone conversations became less possible and then impossible, I wanted her to be free from the disease and its confinement. However, now that Gail is gone, I find myself missing just that she is there, next door. Today is one of those days. Then, as I just did today, I remind myself to look up and talk to Gail. She's talking freely now, and with all the wit, humor, deep insight, and compassion she always had.

Gail so understood that even small gestures in people's lives often have a tremendous impact. She appreciated receiving them, and relished making them. About a year before she left us, while still able to enjoy College Town from her wheel chair and enjoy speaking and communicating with freedom, Gail shared that she had come up with a means to fight her despair over the illness. With her sparking eyes and so sincere smile, she relayed, "Every day, I am going to do something good for somebody else, even if it is something small. I have been doing this every day with intent, and it really helps." The irony is that, from my experience, Gail did this every day of her life anyway.

I was so saddened to read of Gail's passing. I got to know her when I did a story on the trips she took with took with her granddaughters to New York City for InRegister many years ago.
