Buel Ballard passed away on August 8, 2018, in the arms of his loving wife at his home in Denham Springs, after a lengthy illness. A lifelong resident of Denham Springs, he was born on July 20, 1945. He retired in 2007 from Iron Workers Local Union 623, having been an apprentice since June of 1967. After completing his apprenticeship program, he received his journeyman's book in July of 1969. Buel has had many accomplishments over the years and worked at many job sites, being called "the best lay-out man" for the iron workers. He was also a welder, connector and bolt-up man, never afraid of heights. He performed construction on the St. Francisville paper mill and the Mississippi paper mill. He helped to build the Blue Cross building and the newspaper building on Bluebonnet Boulevard in Baton Rouge and the CF Plant in Geismar. He also worked at all the plants up and down the Mississippi River. He was known as a real iron worker, through and through. Buel became an honorary member of the Iron Workers Union with 40 years of service and in 2010 became a lifetime member. As of June 1, 2018, he had been a member with the Iron Workers for 51 years. He was a very kind and gentle person and was thought of highly by his friends and relatives. His greatest love was bass fishing and he spent many hours enjoying the sport. He is survived by his wife, Mildred Denham Ballard; daughters, Brandi Ballard and Courtney Ballard, and her husband, Zeke Guidry, granddaughters, Carsyn Baker and Carleigh Adams; brother, Billy R. Ballard and his wife, Lynn Ballard, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elbert Ballard and Donis Covington Ballard, and his sister, Brenda Ballard Meadors. Pallbearers are Ronnie Palmer, Tommy Hayes, Rudy Robinson, Pat Welch, Gene Elgin and Robb Mouch. Honorary pallbearers are Hal Rasberry, Alton Ray Juban, Sterling Vincent, and Richard Williamson. I remember Buel when I was a young man all the way up to about age 20. He was always loving and friendly and also very intelligent.
Buel never met a stranger. I remember the times he and Aunt Margie came to hear me perform in one of the bands I played in.
He will surely be missed by many.
Sincere sympathy to Brandi, Courtney and the other family members in this time.
