A reporter, author and teacher, he died on Sunday, July 8, 2007. Born in New Orleans on June 21, 1949, and a resident of Baton Rouge, he served in the U.S. Army and earned a degree in broadcast journalism from LSU in 1974. He covered news in Alabama and Florida as well as in Alexandria, New Orleans and Baton Rouge. Originally a second assistant city editor on the State-Times, he moved to general assignment reporting and the copy desk of the Morning Advocate in the early 1980s. He later became an investigative reporter at WBRZ-TV and returned to newspaper reporting in 1993. He also taught journalism as an adjunct instructor in the Manship School of Mass Communications. Dunne won journalism awards for general-assignment reporting, as well as police, courts, education and city hall and later environmental issues. In the late 1980s, Dunne and Advocate reporter Bob Anderson received national honors three times in one year for stories on coastal erosion and a series of stories on air pollution in Baton Rouge. Dunne was a two-time winner of the Scripps-Howard Foundation's Edward J. Meeman Award. This spring, Dunne received the first America's Wetland Conservationist of the Year award for stories on threats to Louisiana's coast. A founding member of the Society of Environmental Journalists, he was co-author of the book "America's Wetland: Louisiana's Vanishing Coast" with photographer Bevil Knapp. An Eagle Scout, Dunne was a volunteer with Istrouma Area Council, Boy Scouts of America, serving as council vice chairman of programs. He also trained adult Scouters and junior leaders using the Woodbadge course program and the Junior Leader Training program. In addition, he was known for work with Alcoholics Anonymous and the O'Brien House, where he was a board member. He is survived by his wife, Freda Claire Yarbrough Dunne of Baton Rouge; sons, William Bradford Pipes Dunne of Monterey, Calif., and Dylan William Dunne of Baton Rouge; mother, Geraldine Helen Kussmann Dunne of New Orleans; two sisters, Kathleen Lee Dunne Galliand and her husband, Ronald Victor Galliand, of Mandeville, and Deborah Lee Dunne Brennan and her husband, James Christopher Brennan, of Raleigh, N.C.; three nephews, Scott Michael Galliand of Richmond, Va., Mark William Galliand and his wife, Raelyn Angele Christensen Galliand, of Mandeville and Matthew Charles Brennan of Raleigh, N.C.; and two great-nieces, Haeleigh Elizabeth Galliand and Madelyn Rose Galliand of Mandeville. A PERIOD IN MY LIFE I'' NEVER FORGET, AND THE MAN STANDING NEXT TO ME IS ALSO UNFORGETTABLE.

Dear Freda,

You probably don’t remember me – we spoke a few years ago at a newspaper conference. I told you of my Louisiana connections, but didn’t realize – until today -- that you and I are just a couple of degrees separated.

I happened to be on SEJ’s web site and noticed a guest book for Mike, whom I now know is your late husband. I am a fan of his work – America’s Wetland is a wonderful, important book. Coincidentally, I used to work at the TP with Ellis Lucia, Bevil Knapp’s husband.

I shared the sad news with my colleagues here at Legacy.com, and learned that many of them are YOUR fans. Please know that we are thinking of you.

Best regards,

To Freda and the rest of Mike's family,
I've known Mike for many years through SEJ and wanted to make sure you know that to many of us Mike has been, and always will be, a shining example of what it means to be a passionate reporter, a generous colleague, and a courageous human being. We already miss him, and we will not forget him.

Dear Freda, family and friends:
Mike and I worked side-by-side for years on the SEJournal. His creation and perfection of the Inside Story served journalists around the nation. It testifies to his generous soul. Someone of his stature in the field might have just kept it all to himself and lived quite satisfied. Instead he tried to better us all. That is quite a legacy. The SEJ family will greatly miss Mike, his contributions, his sense of humor and his insight.
My heartfelt sympathy.

Freda, I have prayed for the right words to say to let you know how truly sad my heart is over Mike's death. As you know, we were close. I saved his life once, he told me, and I feel he gave me a lot more. I will miss him. We worked together on many stories. We partied together and we both loved the work of a Journalist. God will forever watch over you and the boys is my prayer.

Thank you, Mike, for always being available with advice and encouragement. Even when I moved away from Louisiana, I could count on you to respond to posts on the SEJ listserv when I needed guidance. You will be missed and environmental journalism has lost a pioneer and shining star. You know, I never thought to ask you if we might be related. My great aunt, Julia Dunne, came into Boston in the late 1800s from Ireland.

Freda, Brad and Dylan,
I consider myself one of the luckiest people I know to have had the chance to work with Mike these last few years. Freda, you gave me my first job in journalism and then I'm able to work on the project of a lifetime with Mike so many years later.
He was always willing to laugh at himself or better yet, me. He was kind and compassionate- a true mentor. Mike was a gifted writer who was always willing for anyone to share the benefit of his knowledge.
I am a better person for having known him. I will always miss him.

To Freda and your sons: I truly liked and respected Mike. I worked with him beginning in the early 80's. His sense of humor was really fun. He left us at such a young age. You are surrounded by a loving, supportive group of folks at the Advocate, whom I know will provide sincere and unending consolation for your grief.

Dear Dunne Family:
It was my pleasure to have worked with Mike at WBRZ-TV during the early 90's. He was a great reporter and tremendous addition to our staff.

I am very sad to hear of the passing of Mike Dunne. I met Mike while working at WLSU in the early 1970's and will always remember him as being a great person to know. Before my retirement as an Environmental Scientist I was contacted by Mike for information on some environmental matters and it was great hearing from him then. Mike, we will all miss you and remember you for the wonderful and caring person you were. May peace be with you my friend.

Freda, Brad, and Dylan - When my mother told me of Mike's passing, my heart broke for you. Freda, you are one of the strongest ladies I know and you'll get through this. Your terrific boys will help you remember the best of your life with Mike. I didn't know him well but I know you were happy with him and he made you laugh. I'll give you a call soon and try to see you the next time I'm in Baton Rouge.

Freda,
Linda and I are so sorry for your -- and the world's -- loss. Mike was a true friend and we were proud to have him as best man at our wedding. He lived a full, rich and enriching life. As others have noted, he was a journalist's journalist; the profession so desperately needs more like him. He also leaves a magnificent legacy with future generations of journalists and the young men he helped mold through Scouting. God, I miss him.

Freda,
It seems like Mike and I have had many Scouting experiences together. We both received the Silver Beaver on the same night. We served on several Wood Badge courses together. I asked him to be my senior patrol leader when I was the course director. For some time I felt that I would like Mike to speak at my funeral and tell semothing about my love for Scouting and my experiences. Unfortunately, his passing was early in his life, and now I will be paying tribute to him on the occasion of his passing.

Having previously lost my wife to cancer, I know something about what you have gone through. My heart goes out to you and to your sons. We all will miss Mike. Know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Freda,
All I can say is we'll miss him at the Manship School and I'll miss him as a person. Mike was a reporter's reporter. He didn't mind digging through documents -- in fact, he relished it. He didn't mind tackling hard to understand science and he was really good at explaining it all in simple terms to readers. His work on coastal erosion forced the state and its citizens to pay attention to the problem long before New Orleans was flooded. I wish there were more around like him.

Dear Freda, Dylan and Brad,
We are so sad to hear of Mike's death. Our love goes out to you all during this time. The pictures you sent in June, of family and the awards ceremony stirred so many memories of our 20 years as neighbors and continued friendship. I have a great picture of Mike just as he was giving some witty comment, that crooked smile of his that showed more in his eyes than on his mouth and that wild eyebrow raised high..I'll always remember him like that. Mike's wit, intelligence, humor and support during trying times leaves my family with joyful memories of a good neighbor and friend. Mike's tireless work to educate the public on the environment and so many other topics leaves the world a better place and challenges us to be more aware and active. A teacher to the end he even showed us how to leave with grace and love. Dylan and Ian send their love as well.

Mike was one of the best co-workers I ever had. It was a joy to be on the same staff with him. Mike shared his wisdom, humor and knowledge with those around him. It's something I've missed in the 4 years since leaving Baton Rouge. Mike had two big things going for him in journalism: He was one of the best at what he did and he was a nice guy too. This business could use more like him.

To Freda, family and friends,
I read with great sadness of Mike's passing. Please know that you have my deepest sympathy for your loss. I first met Mike a little over 30 years ago, when he was working for the Alexandria Daily Town Talk, where he was a sportswriter, as I recall, and I was a summer intern. How far we have all traveled from those days. Mike was a good man, a great character and a fine colleague. I read of his accomplishments with respect and admiration, and I laugh when I remember his biting wit and darting eyebrows. For all the sorrow that arises with his passing, it seems he left each of you with so much more. May those around you console you in grief and join you in celebrating Mike's meaningful life and work.

Mike Dunne was a journalist of national standing whose intelligence, wit and humor will be sorely missed by his colleagues and readers. I met him in New Orleans in 2003 and was impressed by the depth of his knowledge about the disappearance of wetlands in Southern Louisiana and what it might mean for cities like New Orleans in a major hurricane. Turns out he and many others were right. It was reporters like Mike who kept the nation informed in the aftermath of that tragedy. I'm only sorry I didn't have time to get to know him better.

I first met Mike during OWLS Training at Perkins Lodge- he immediately impressed me as someone that had terrific insight, keen wit, and could train. We worked together on many scouting events and I always learned from him. Our 2001 Jambo troop were grateful for his assistance on our last day as we were one of the last to leave- Mike brought us food as the place was quickly clearing. It was Mike Dunne that touched so many locally, regionally, and nationally in scouting- I will truly miss him.

I extend my sencire heratfelt sorrow for his loss to his wife and family. I do know one thing, when he sits with God he will be one of God's best and loyal servents as he was in his natural life. May his soul rest in peace with the Lord. Until we meet again old friend.
