Jewel Scruggs Obituary

Jewel Delagarza Scruggs passed away early January 4, 2021 at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital. She was born on January 26, 1929 in Jackson, MS and was soon to celebrate her 92nd birthday. Jewel's life was devoted to her family. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was beloved by her family and friends, including her children and grandchildren's friends. Jewel would light up the room when she entered and everyone enjoyed her witty and fun personality. She was truly a southern lady and her life reflected her commitment to her faith and lifelong beliefs. Jewel and her husband, Billie Scruggs, were members of Broadmoor United Methodist Church for over sixty years. She was a member of the Faith Sunday School Class and many of the women's groups and loved her friends and church family. Jewel supported Billie in his business and activities. They liked to travel with friends especially to out of town LSU games. Together they loved to dance and belonged to several dance groups. There were many laughs and happy times watching their relationship. Jewel was always involved in her daughters' activities. Jewel never missed any of Debbie's horse shows and hauled kids to the barn for years. She really enjoyed Lisa's china painting. Jewel was the room mother many times, supported the church youth group and served as the President of the Kappa Delta mother's club twice. She was a member of PEO and enjoyed the friends she made. Jewel enjoyed visiting Lisa and her family in Dallas making lifelong friends. Jewel survived a rare cancer and was treated at MD Anderson for three months last spring. Everyone at MD Anderson knew her from her outgoing personality and were amazed that she survived Covid in the middle of her treatment and was completely cured. Jewel was an only child and was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband Billie Van Scruggs. She is survived by her daughters Debbie Scruggs Heroman (Rickey), Lisa Scruggs Ryan (Jeff); grandchildren Kelley Heroman Buzzell (John), Cammie Heroman, Bonnie Ryan Welday (Richard), Connor Ryan (Abby); great grandchildren Billy Van Buzzell, Mary Taylor Buzzell, and Jack Brian Buzzell. Jewel was loved by many and will be greatly missed. The family would like to thank Dr. Rebecca Treuil, her doctors at MD Anderson, and her loving caregiver, Rosa White. Pallbearers include: Tommy Bell, John Ross Buzzell, Brian Hargroder, Dwayne Jackson, Ben Lemann, Connor Ryan, Richard Welday, and Kenny Wilkinson. A service will be held on Friday, January 8, at 11:00 a.m., at Broadmoor United Methodist Church. Donations may be made to Broadmoor United Methodist Church (broadmoormethodist.org) 10230 Mollylea Dr., Baton Rouge, LA 70815 or a charity of your choice.
