Jerry Marston Fowler, 68, was born in Shreveport on April 26, 1940. The former commissioner of elections for Louisiana died on Monday, Jan. 26, 2009, in Baton Rouge. Survived by his three children, Susannah Fowler Craig and husband Stewart, of Baton Rouge, Margaret Fowler Abrahams and husband Alan, of Los Angeles, and John Marston Fowler and wife Jennifer, of Baton Rouge. He is also survived by four grandchildren Stewart Craig, Patrick Craig, Chelsea Pritchett and Baylea Pritchett; and by his dear friend, Kathy Adams. He was preceded in death by his wife, MariAnn Fowler; and brother, Dr. Douglas Fowler. After graduating from Northwestern State University where he played football, Jerry was drafted to the Oakland Raiders, and ultimately the Houston Oilers, for whom he was an offensive tackle. He returned to his beloved Louisiana where he owned and operated numerous businesses before being elected to public office. Jerry was someone who gave so much of himself and was so loved in return. He was a son, father, husband, grandfather, friend, athlete and public servant. To those that knew him and were touched by him, he was larger than life. He will be truly missed. I am so grateful that Jerry and I had the opportunity to have dinner together in Baton Rouge about six months ago. His sharp, keen sense of humor made him a pleasure to be around. I have lost a very dear friend.

Your dad was one of the kindest and most loving men I have ever met. He set an example when it came to openly loving his children and family--there was no secret about it! Even though we had lost touch after I left BR, I always treasured his friendship and held him in the highest regard. You have my most sincere sympathy.

Dearest Fowler Family, You are indeed in my heart and prayers in the loss of your Dad. I know Mr. Jerry had to fight just like I have to because we saw each other often at Bolton's buying what we needed to fight Diabetes another day. It was still a joy to see Mr. Jerry even then! I will never forget both your Dad and Mom were our youth group counselors at First United Methodist when I was in high school. It was wonderful to see each other again after all the years. The last time I saw Mr. Jerry was at Bolton's. I will miss your Dad's big smile and warm heart. May God Bless and Comfort You! Lots of Love-Cliff

Mr. Jerry was a dear friend of my grandparents, Vivian and Phillip Maranto. I have many wonderful childhood memories of them all enjoying each others company. I last spoke to Mr. Jerry a little over a year ago when he called to get an update on my grandmothers health. We had a very nice conversation that I will cherish for years to come. He was a very thoughtful and special person. After my grandparents' passing, I now understand how difficult it is to lose someone so dear.
My deepest sympathy to his close friends and family. Mr. Jerry will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
Sincerely,
J'Lynn Langlois Pourciau (Granddaughter of Phillip and Vivian Maranto, Daughter of Maria Maranto Langlois)
