Alma Campbell Obituary

Services for Alma Dale Campbell, 98, of Natchez, who died August 6, 2018, at her home with family, will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, August 11, at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Vidalia, with the Reverend Joseph Xavier officiating. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the church. Burial will follow at Natchez City Cemetery under the direction of Laird Funeral Home. Mrs. Campbell was born October 16, 1919, in Vidalia, La., the daughter of John Dale, Jr., and Alma Roger Dale. She married Richard Andrew Campbell of Ferriday, and they moved to Natchez in 1951. Mrs. Campbell was well-known as a premier and gracious hostess of Natchez, opening her home Edgewood on the Natchez pilgrimage for five decades. She was a member of the Garden Club of America and President of the Pilgrimage Garden Club and was a charter member of the Antiques Forum. She chaired the Longwood Restoration Committee, which was her favorite project, helping to preserve the history of Natchez's most unique home. Mrs. Campbell was a member of the Natchez Cemetery Association and of both St. Mary's Basilica and Our Lady of Lourdes, where she was baptized in 1919. She was also a member of the William Dunbar Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and The Order of First Families of Mississippi. Mrs. Campbell is preceded in death by her husband, Richard, and her son, Richard Andrew Campbell, Jr. She is survived by her children, Dale Campbell Fairbanks and her husband, Bill; Judy Lowe Campbell; and Brian Douglas Campbell and his wife, Donna; her grandchildren, Alma Dale Campbell Brown and her husband, Dan Senor; Elizabeth Gentry Brann and her husband, Michael; Anna Kathryne Campbell Kronenberger and her husband, Brian; Lauren Campbell Hughey and her husband, Jim; Helene Meredith St. Clair and her husband, Tom; Judith Campbell Jones and her husband, Jason; Christen Campbell Siegel and her husband, Stephen; Richard Andrew Campbell III and his wife, Heather; Brian Douglas Campbell, Jr, and his wife, Betsy; William Gilmore Fairbanks; and Catherine Claire Campbell; and her 23 great-grandchildren, all of whom called her "Cher." The family wishes to extend our gratitude for their loving care of our "Miss Alma" to Southern Angels Staffing Services, Camellia Hospice, and Heart2Heart Home Health Care. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages memorials be sent to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church: The Stained Glass Project, P.O. Box 460, Vidalia, LA 71373; The Cathedral School, 701 N. Martin Luther King Drive, Natchez, MS 39120, or the charity of your choice. Online condolences may be sent to the family at lairdfh.com.
