Sister Kate Estell Shanklin departed this life peacefully on Thursday, May 10, 2018. She was the oldest child born to the union of the late Lionel and Alma E. Williams Shanklin on October 14, 1950, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Kate came to Christ and was baptized at the Greater St. James Baptist Church. She graduated from McKinley Senior High School in May 1968 where she was a very active member in the drama club and voted Miss Congeniality of the Senior class. Kate continued her education at Southern University graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in secondary education with a concentration in Speech Pathology in August 1972. After college Kate completed a few Master level courses in education at Louisiana State University. Kate worked for East Baton Rouge Parish School System where she taught Speech Education for several years at McKinley Senior, Capitol and Pride High Schools. Kate was employed as a Claims Examiner for over 27 years at the Office of State Group Benefits until she retired in 2013. Kate was a member of the Greater St. James Baptist Church where she spent the past decade as an active member of the Kitchen Committee. Kate was an easy going and fun loving person. Kate found so much joy in cooking and baking and sharing her delightful dishes and treats with all as an expression of her love. She is survived by two brothers, Gary Shanklin, Thibodaux, Louisiana, and Lionel (Iris) Shanklin Jr., Decatur, Georgia; one loving daughter, Dr. Anna Patrice Shanklin, Lithonia, Georgia; a faithful niece, Donnell L. Ward, Baton Rouge, Louisiana; a cherished nephew, Lionel Edward Shanklin, Decatur, Georgia; one aunt, Georgette W. Johnson, Thibodaux, Louisiana; two treasured, devoted and loving best friends Marilyn Renee' Hullaby and Gwen Matthews; faithful lifelong family friends Robert and Effie Scott; and a host of family and friends. Kate is preceded in death by her parents, Lionel and Alma W. Shanklin, and her favorite aunt Symentha Estell Williams. Visitation on Saturday, May 19, 2018, from 9 a.m. until religious services at 11 a.m. at the Greater St. James Baptist Church, 1919 Arizona Street, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, with Pastor Roland Glover officiating. Interment will follow the religious services at Southern Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Services entrusted to Desselle Funeral Home.

May the Lord Bless and keep you all at the very troubled time. She was a lovely woman with a beautiful spirit that radiated love everywhere she went. My condolences to my dear friend Anna and her family. She is now your guardian angel who you know have with you always.
