Kathy Hoyt Obituary

Kathy Violette Hoyt, age 63, of Baton Rouge, died on October 6, 2018, at The Crossing at Clarity Hospice in Baton Rouge, after a 9-year battle with breast cancer. She was born in Radford, Virginia, on February 26, 1955, to Ashton E. Violette and the late Carolyn Powell Roberts. Foremost in Kathy's life was her enduring and obedient faith in God. She was a student of the Bible and biblical history. She earned a double major from the University of Virginia in religion and psychology. She lived the Golden Rule; her personal creed was "Be kind ... you never know what battles people are fighting." Kathy loved her husband, Tom, her home state of Virginia, her extensive book collection, and needlepointing. Her keen intellect, along with her sense of awe and wonder at God's creation, prompted Kathy's daily discipline of contemplation, study and prayer. She lived her faith in multiple ways, perhaps most evidently in the respect, interest, compassion, and kindness she showed to each person whose path she crossed, whether family, friend, co-worker or stranger. Just as vital to Kathy's nature, however, was her signature sense of humor. Possessing both an unerring eye for the ludicrous and a lightning-fast wit, Kathy could cut to the heart of any situation in a way that left everyone around her laughing. Kathy kept each of these - her faith, intelligence, consideration of others, and humor - throughout her struggle with cancer. Never complaining, grateful for each day of life allotted to her, Kathy was an inspiration to those who knew and loved her. She is survived by her husband, Tom Hoyt of Baton Rouge; her father and stepmother, Ashton E. and Barbara Violette of Midlothian, Virginia; her brother and sister-in-law, John and Melinda Violette of Richmond; her brother, Stuart Violette; her brother and sister-in-law, David Violette and Julie Jenkins of Blacksburg, Virginia; her stepbrother, Michael Nichols of Nags Head, North Carolina; her aunt, Nancy Prillaman of Newport News; her uncle, Dr. Eugene D. Cizek of New Orleans; her brother-in-law, Jim Hoyt of Pineville; her sister-in-law, Carolyne D. Hoyt of Pineville; her sister-in-law and her husband, Kerri and Eric Reed of Alexandria; her cousins, Nan Robertson of Newport News, Virginia, and Susan Brown of Hampton, Virginia; numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her mother, Carolyn Powell Roberts; her stepfather, William Roberts; her mother-in-law, Dorothy Cizek Hoyt; her father-in-law, James P. Hoyt Jr.; and her brother-in-law, Dan Martin Hoyt. Visitation will be on Sunday, October 14, 2018, at Rabenhorst Funeral Home (825 Government St., Baton Rouge, LA 70802) from 12:00 pm until the Memorial Service at 2:00 pm. A reception will follow at the home of Jamie and Tommy Karam. The family would like to thank: the staff of The Crossing at Clarity Hospice for their selfless care during her final days; the Louisiana Board of Regents family for their unwavering support of Kathy's wish to continue working throughout her illness; the nurses and staff at Mary Bird Perkins, and Dr. Vince Cataldo, Kathy's oncologist, who stood with her and Tom for nine years, facing each challenge with respect, compassion and professional brilliance. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to NextSTEP of Central Louisiana, 220 Hospital Boulevard, Pineville, Louisiana 71360.

I came to Houston in the 80's very shy, unsophisticated, and young. Kathy Violette Hoyt hosted and taught a Bible study which I attended. She was witty and vivacious. She made me feel welcome and comfortable. She also invested many hours of time in me one on one, in what I would now call a mentoring role, yet her kindness made me feel like her friend. She was supportive and was able to discreetly give me hints on general life skills. Kathy was the one I turned to for support in the middle of a family tragedy. I really missed her friendship when life took us in different directions, and I will always remember her with great fondness. I am confident that she is in the presence of her great and beautiful Lord, and look forward to seeing her again one day.
