Rufus Yerger Obituary

Rufus Taft Yerger, Jr. of Baton Rouge, LA, passed away on December 23, 2018, in Hinsdale, IL while visiting his daughter, Kathryn Yerger Band and her family. Mr. Yerger, 76, was a realtor with Coldwell Banker One and a retired farmer. He was born in Vicksburg, MS on January 8, 1942. He grew up in Tallulah, LA, and resided most of his life in Mound, LA farming. Mr. Yerger was a graduate of Tallulah High School and the University of Southern Mississippi where he became a member of Kappa Alpha Order. Active in the Mound community, he was on the Executive Board of Farmers, Grain River Terminal for 10 years and a member and organizer of the Mound Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Yerger managed Maxwell Plantation from 1964 to 1972 as well as a 1200 head cattle ranch. From 1973 to 1990, he was President of Diamond Island Hunting Club. He was, also, Vice President of Yerger Investment Group from 1973 until his death. In 1997, Mr. Yerger moved to Baton Rouge, LA. He worked for the LA Department of Agriculture for several years before becoming a full-time realtor. At his death, he worked with Coldwell Banker One selling large tracts of land in Louisiana and Mississippi. He was a Rural Land Specialist, Farm Consultant, longtime member of the GBRAR and Former Realtor Land Institute Member. Mr. Yerger is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Gay Cooper Yerger (Baton Rouge), Daughter: Paige Yerger Hulsey (Doug) La Canada, CA, Son: John Sevier Yerger (Melanie) Covington, LA, Daughter: Kathryn Yerger Band (Gregg) Hinsdale, IL and grandchildren: Taft Hulsey, Adam Hulsey, Sarah Yerger, John Yerger, Jr., Bryce Band and Pierce Band; sisters: Carolyn (Tinker) Yerger Bishop and Flora Yerger Tucker both of Tallulah, LA. His father, Rufus Taft Yerger, Sr. and his mother, Carolyn Sevier Yerger of Tallulah, LA, preceded him in death. A memorial service will be held on January 19, 2019, at St. James Episcopal Church in Baton Rouge (205 N. 4th Street, Baton Rouge, LA 70801) from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm. Visitation will be held during the first hour with the service to follow. A special thanks is given to his brother and sister-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. John W. Hoppe, everyone at Coldwell Banker One, his friends, neighbors and his doctors for their caring assistance over the years. Donations may be made to St. James Episcopal Church, Cancer Services of Greater Baton Rouge or a charity of your choosing.

I just found out my KA brother passed on to heaven. I haven't seen Rufus since my graduation from USM in 1963. Rufus was a kind person. Condolences to all his family and many friends. Rest In Peace Rufus you were liked by many many people.
