Stanford O. Bardwell, Jr., a native of Baton Rouge, passed away at his home on Saturday, June 9, 2018, at the age of 78. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Leslie Groves Bardwell, son Brian Bardwell of Nashville, TN, son Patrick Bardwell of Baton Rouge and daughter Erin Bardwell Irby and husband, Kramer, of Baton Rouge together with grandchildren Bowman, Ellie and Hayden Irby. He is also survived by siblings, Duke Bardwell and wife Rebecca, sister-in-law Julia Powelle Bardwell, Princeton Bardwell and wife Dadie, Auburn Bardwell Harris and husband Ron, Cornell Bardwell Dear, and sister-in-law Linda Groves Grace and husband Fred Grace, as well as numerous nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents Stanford O. Bardwell, Sr. and Loyola Munson Bardwell and siblings T'lane Bardwell Berry, brother-in-law Lynn Berry, and Harvard Bardwell. After graduating from Baton Rouge High School, Stan attended the University of Michigan then returned to Baton Rouge to complete his studies at LSU and receive a law degree from LSU Law School. As an undergraduate he served as the Air Force Corp Commander in ROTC, and, upon graduation, was commissioned as an officer in the Judge Advocate General Corps serving in the Azores Islands attaining the rank of Captain before being discharged and commencing his career practicing law in Baton Rouge. In 1981, Stan was appointed U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Louisiana and prosecuted numerous difficult and high profile cases. In 1986 he resigned and moved to Washington D.C. to take the job of Deputy General Counsel for the U.S. Energy Department, but returned to private practice in Baton Rouge two years later and continued in that capacity until his retirement six months ago. Stan loved his family, friends and community and gave generously of himself all of his life. He was an ardent contributor to numerous social, civic and political organizations, most notably the Republican Party of Louisiana, Le Circle de Bacchus, Rotary Club of Baton Rouge, Cancer Services of Greater Baton Rouge and East Baton Rouge Parish Library Board. However, Stan's true self seemed most at home serving in his church, First Presbyterian Church, where he was a deacon, elder and Sunday school teacher and committee chair or member on numerous projects throughout his 30 years of service. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of Bill Glass Prison Ministries where he coordinated and served on numerous evangelical missions within prisons throughout the South. For decades, each year during Holy Week, Stan joined with other faithful men for spiritual renewal and inspiration at Manresa House of Retreats on the banks of the Mississippi. Visitation will be on Thursday, June 14, at 10:00AM until memorial service at 11:30AM in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church 763 North Boulevard. A private, family burial at Roselawn Cemetery will follow. Honorary pall bearers are Terry Hubbs, Henson Moore, Bill Mitchell, Winston D'Armond, William D'Armond and Fred Grace. In lieu of flowers, the family would be grateful for contributions to Our Lady of the Lake Children's Hospital. (ololchildrens.org/giving-opportunities)

Leslie,
I have just learned of Stan's passing. As with many others, an part of me is gone. Growing up and later in life, when faced with issues, my Dad would often say, what would Stan do, and I would stop and analyze and find the best course. A part of us is gone.
Bess you and the days of our memories.

Saddened to learn of Stan's passing. We shared a bond as US Attorneys in the Reagan era. He was a friend and Helen and I will miss him even as the miles kept us apart for many years. Leslie, we have great memories of our days in Virginia and please know of our deepest sympathy.

We, Joan and Rich Launey, are truly sadden by this loss. Mr. Bardwell gave Rich one of the greatest blessings in his life. Mr. Bardwell kindly hired Rich as an AUSA. Not only was Mr. Bardwell a great US Attorney, he was a truly wonderful man. It was an honor to serve with him as both Joan and Rich had the chance to do. May God bless Mr. Bardwell and may God be a comfort to his family. Our community has lost a true gentleman and leader. Due to Rich's disability, we cannot attend the service. However, Mr. Bardwell and his family will be in our prayers.

How sad this makes me. Stan was a such an instrumental part of my life. He was my boss, my mentor, and my friend. He was intelligent, funny, and always a gentleman. I will be forever grateful to have met him at the LSU game in College Station in 1992. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Leslie :
So sorry to hear of Stan's passing. You and Stan welcomed us into the old neighborhood 25 years ago and were great neighbors, so kind to us and our sons. Stan always greeted us with a big smile and a handshake or hug - just a fine gentleman and a delight to know. His memory will stay in our hearts and we will hold you in our thoughts and prayers.

I am saddened to hear that Stan has passed away. My son Adam and I were in Indian Guides with Stan and I believe Patrick. Our "tribe" had great times together. I have seen Stan through the years intermittently and always appreciated his great smile and kind words. I admired his great integrity. Our community has lost an asset and I share in your grief.

Dearest Leslie,
While I did not know Stan personally, I have always known of him and what an exceptional and caring person he was. You two were so lucky to have found each other and to have shared such a rich life together. You are special too, Leslie, and I call myself blessed to be your friend.
