Alton Baxter began his walk with Jesus on August 1, 2018 at the age of 89. He was born in Logtown, MS. and lived in Baker/Zachary, LA. A lifetime of public service began at 17 years old when Alton joined the US Navy, serving during the Korean War. He joined the Louisiana State Police, where after 21 years of service he retired as a Sergeant. He then began a 21 year career with the East Baton Rouge Sheriffs Office; officially retiring in 2005. Alton is survived by his companion of 14 years Thanie McKinnon; children Judy Baxter, Debbie Joiner, Dorothy & Jerry Bonaventure, Darrell & Robin Baxter, Denise & Andy Davison and Jan Miller. Grandchildren Chris & Jennifer Baxter, Jonathan Baxter, Darbie Hood, Jimi Leger, Courtney Baxter, Devin B Mann, Trevor O'Neal and Sydni O'Neal. Great grandchildren Coy, Cade and Carson Baxter, Reagan and Adrianah Walters, Jame' Hood, Haiden Burbank, Lydia Léger and Cayden Mann. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years Mary Jackson Baxter, 2 sons Danny Baxter and Doran Baxter and granddaughter Michelle Walters. A private family memorial will be held. In lieu of flowers; donations can be made to Calef.la (providing bullet proof vests for police officers).
