Clarence Fountain, founding member of the Blind Boys of Alabama, was born on November 28, 1929, to the late Mr. Willie and Ida C. Fountain in Tyler, Alabama. Clarence departed this life on Sunday, June 3, 2018 at Our Lady of the Lake hospital in Baton Rouge, LA. In 2015, Clarence joined the Promise Land Baptist Church in Baton Rouge, LA, under the leadership of Dr. Perry Wright Jr. Clarence loved his church and thought no one could preach like his pastor. He was a dedicated member and appreciated the church for accepting him for who he was. On May 16, 2018, he performed his final performance with the Blind Boys of Alabama at the Manship Theatre in Baton Rouge, LA. Clarence impacted lives all over the world, and for this, he will always be remembered! He leaves to cherish his memory his loving and devoted wife of 19 years, Barbara Fountain, and a host of family and friends. Final viewing will be held at Promise Land Baptist Church on Monday, June 11, 2018, from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm. Musical to follow at 6:00 pm. Funeral Services will be held at Mt. Pilgrim Life Center on Tuesday, June 12, 2018, at 11:00 am.

The gospel world has lost a legend. I grew up on the Five Blind Boys' music and Clarence Fountain was a joy to see and hear. Thank you Lord for blessings.

I recall to mind how Gospel artist, Fred Hammond, sampled Clarence Fountain's voice from the Five Blind Boys of Alabama's song of the 1960's, "Our Revival Time" into his 1991 song, "I Came To Jesus As I Was." It was my first time hearing a Gospel tune sampled into another Gospel song. I still like both songs to this day. Thank God for the gift of Clarence and his anointed voice, and for giving us hope of eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Barbara,
Please accept my condolences on the passing of Clarence.
His deep baritone voice will be missed in live concert, but anyone blessed with the opportunity to see him perform gospel live, will have lifetime memories of his consummate artistry and craft.
I'm glad I've had multiple opportunities to witness the power of his gifts in the states and abroad.
He leaves quite a legacy in his body of work.
Blessings to you, the family members and friends.

Mrs. Fountain, your husband, Mr. Clarence presence will truly be missed. I know how much love and care you showered on him. Now God has him in His care, there are no better hands to be in. The psalmist states: ...yea though you walk through the valley of the shadows of death, fear no evil for God is with you... It is not easy, but it gets better. May you find comfort in your memories. It is with sincere condolences that we express these words. May God bless you and your family. One of my favorite song they recorded is: "It could have been me."

I was very heartbroken to hear about the transitioning of Bro. Clarence Fountain. I've been a fan of his since I was four years old...wow...46 years. I love his song, "How Far Am I From Canaan" so much that it's been my ringtone on my phone for a few years now. In honor of his legacy, it will remain permanent. Rest on Bro. Fountain, I'll meet you in the resurrection.
