Cloatiel Mills Obituary

(Mazie) Cloatiel Dunn Mills, 94, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana passed peacefully in her sleep on November 1, 2018 at the home of her granddaughter Tauja Turner of Lake Elsinore, California. Born April 7, 1924 in Homer, Louisiana, she is predeceased by her parents, James and Precious Ann (Heard) Dunn of Homer, Louisiana, her husband Clarence Joseph Mills of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, a newborn son Billy Mills, five sisters Samantha Dunn Banks, Erma Ella Dunn Williams, Francis Iris Dunn Overton, Lemora Dunn Marshall, and Maxine Dunn Taylor, and two brothers, Clinton Dunn and James Dunn, and her son-in-law Charles Beverly. Cloatiel attended Leland College in Baker, Louisiana for 16 years, from pre-primer until she received her bachelor's degree in 1945. She later received a masters degree from Southern University and also attended Louisiana State University. She taught in the Iberville Parish school system, and later taught English at Southern University for many years. She loved her family, friends, church. gardening, movies, traveling, and working out at the AC Lewis YMCA. She is survived by her three children Dedra Mills Beverly of Baton Rouge, Louisiana/Lake Elsinore, California, Karen Mills Jenkins of Orange Park, Florida, and Len Mills of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, seven grandchildren, Tauja Turner of Lake Elsinore, California, Richard Turner of Reading, Pennsylvania, Marvin Turner of Town Creek, Alabama, Jermaine Beverly of Reading, Pennsylvania , Jacob Beverly of Georgia, Matthew Jenkins of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Shannon Jenkins Bryant of Orange Park, Florida. She is also survived by her brother Samuel J. Dunn of North Carolina, and a host of great- and great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and wonderful friends. A memorial service will be planned for a later date.
