Grace Rita (Gonzales) Legendre Obituary
A native of New Orleans and long time resident of Baton Rouge, she died September 10, 2018 at Our House for Respite. She was a graduate of St. Joseph's Academy of New Orleans. A lifelong Catholic, she attended Our Lady of Mercy until her health prevented her from going. She still watched the Mass on television, and received communion at home regularly. She also enjoyed watching the major annual golf tournaments. When she was younger, two of her favorite activities were summer trips out to California to see her best friend, a well known local artist along the original Route 66, and spending Mardi Gras in New Orleans attending balls and parades. She loved to tell stories including stories about her father's time on the New Orleans Cotton Exchange. However, as time passed she would get confused between fact and fiction. So sometimes her stories took on astonishing and hilarious turns which made for great entertainment and mirth for the Our House for Respite staff, family, and visitors. She is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Rita (Betsy) Legendre Williams and her husband Kenneth Ray (Ken) Williams; a granddaughter, Katherine Rita (Katie) Williams Lee and her husband Michael (Mike) Glenn Lee; a grandson, Brett Houston Williams, and a great-grandson, Austin Michael Lee, a nephew, R. Clay Baxter, Aliso Viejo, CA and two nieces Beverly H. Columbo, Picayune, MS and Lynn H. Pavlovich, Pearlington, MS. She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Luke Oliver Legendre, Jr. parents, Felix and Margaret L. Gonzales, a brother, Francis H. Gonzales, two sisters, Edmee Gonzales Sykes and Eunice (Tiny) Gonzales Hauck, a neice, Jan G. Gower, and two nephews, Roy Tujague and James L. Tujague. Visitation will be held Monday, September 17, 2018 at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church from 9:00 to 10:30 AM followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 conducted by the Rev. Cleo Milano. Inurnment will follow at Resthaven Gardens of Memory Columbarium. The family wishes to thank Linda White who took loyal and devoted care of Mrs. Grace and Mr. Ollie for several years in their home.
