John Bowen Knotts, age 74, passed away in his sleep after a brief battle with lung cancer at 2:30 a.m., Tuesday, August 7, 2018 at his home in Washington, D. C. Born in Natchez, MS, the youngest child of Edward Bowen Knotts and Donna Fitch Knotts. He was raised on a cotton farm in North Louisiana, where he led a carefree and adventurous life growing up. He graduated from Sicily Island High School then earned a BA in Art from Louisiana State University, MS in Math Education from Southern University, and an MA in Urban Planning from the University of Virginia. John lived and worked in many places during his life including Natchez, New Orleans, Dallas, and the last 35 years in Washington, D. C. He was fun loving and enjoyed traveling and collecting antiques and art. He leaves behind many friends, especially Richard Hiltner, his companion for the last 29 years. His brother, Walter Knotts of Baton Rouge, LA, sisters, Mary Knotts Galantowicz of Franklin, TN and Martha Knotts Newchurch of Paincourtville, LA, survive him. Ten nieces and nephews, twenty-five great nieces and nephews and numerous cousins also survive John. All of his friends and family will miss him. The family wishes to express sincere thanks to The Dr. Cyrus & Myrtle Katzen Cancer Research Center, George Washington University Hospital and Capital Caring Hospice. A memorial service will be held at All Souls Unitarian Church in Washington, D.C at a later date.
