Joy Barras Smith passed away in Baton Rouge on Wednesday, June 6th, 2018, at the age of 84. Originally of St. Martinville, Joy recently resided at the Blake at the Grove with friends and was close to family. Joy attended Mercy High School in St Martinville and was a graduate of the University of South Louisiana as one of the first women to graduate in the math and science curriculum. After graduation, she taught at Port Allen Elementary then dedicated her time to family and raising her four children. An avid tennis player and seamstress, she combined her two passions into a signature line of tennis wear. She was always at the ready for dance outfits, ball and Mardi Gras gowns and even jerseys for the boys. All of the children spent plenty of time playing hide and seek in the bolts and looking at patterns in Hancock Fabrics. The entire family also has fond memories of time spent at Joy and sister Sue Sue's home at St John Plantation that has been shared with children and grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Charles C. Smith, and her parents Mitchell Barras and Elsie DeLaune Barras. She is survived by sister Sue Sue Laviolette (husband George) of Lafayette; children Michelle Smith of St Gabrial, La., Eric Smith (wife Vickie) of Austin, Tx, Stacy Tucker of Plano, Tx, John G. Smith (wife Lisa) of Jenks, Ok. Grandchildren Cole Smith, Grayson Smith, Brennan Tucker, Jennifer Bennett, Gannon Brooks (in memorium). Great-grandchildren Zoey and Boston Bennett. Our family would like to give a special thanks to our mother's Godchild and niece, Sylvia Gerace, for her love and comfort. The family would also like to show our appreciation for the fabulous staff and care mangers at the Blake at the Grove and Sunrise Assisted Living for their comfort and support. A Memorial Visitation will be held at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St., Baton Rouge, Louisiana, 70802 on Friday, June 15, 2018, from 11AM until NOON. The Memorial Service will begin at NOON. There will be a reception immediately after the service for friends and family.
