It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Louis "Mike" D. Michel III on January 8, 2021, after a short but hard fought battle with cancer. Mike was 62 years old and a resident of Oakland, CA. Mike was born and raised in Baton Rouge, LA to Louis and Jennie (Ferrara) Michel. He graduated from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge in 1983 with a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture and later earned a Masters of Regional Planning from University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. From 2000-2003 Mike served in the Peace Corps as a Community Economic Development Advisor in both Bulgaria and East Timor. In 2008 he earned a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from California State University, Hayward and taught kindergarten for 6 years in the Oakland Unified School District. Mike then went on to teach overseas at Bilkent Laboratory and International School in Ankara, Turkey for two years. His most recent endeavors were as a Childcare Provider for families in the East Bay and becoming a Certified Massage Therapist. Mike was also an avid gardener, creating a magical garden in his backyard which provided himself, neighbors, friends and family with delicious and healthful produce. In the eyes of his family Mike was a true Renaissance man: environmentalist; local and world community service leader; beloved teacher "Mr. Mike"; master gardener and sustainability advocate; world traveler and voracious reader; artistic and creative jewelry and mobile maker and quilter; friend extraordinaire; loving and supportive brother; a gentle, kind loving human who "like(d) to watch things grow." Mike is survived by his sisters Patricia (Gerry Lustic) and Kris (Mark Fussell); nephew Cory Lustic; and nieces Madeline and Mary-Margaret Fussell. Due to COVID, a private burial was held at Fernwood Cemetery in Mill Valley, CA. The family plans to have a Celebration of Mike's life at a later date. A special thank you to Kaiser Hospital Hospice Services and Roxana Family Home Care. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to your favorite charity
in Mike's honor.
