Our beloved father, John Salvador Bellecci, peacefully passed away in his home surrounded by his family on December 22, 2017, at the age of 94. He was born September 29, 1923, in Martinez, California and was a resident of Baton Rouge, LA, for almost 50 years. He was preceded in death by his parents Salvador and Mary (Russo) Bellecci, sister Marie Glazier and infant son Tony. John was a World War II veteran who served in the Pacific as a Staff Sargent in the Army Quartermaster Corps where he constructed and operated gasoline storage tanks and distribution systems. His duties moved him to several locations in the south Pacific and ultimately to Japan after the surrender. When he returned home from the war, he continued his college education at the University of California- Berkeley where he earned a degree in chemical engineering. In 1949, he met the love of his life, Ileane Norheim, a registered nurse. They were married that year and established residency in Berkeley. He worked for several chemical companies in California and Illinois before he moved his family to Louisiana in 1968 where he was Plant Manager and ultimately Group Vice President of Borden Chemical, Inc. He retired in 1989, then he and his wife Ileane happily traveled the world for years. Along with his love of traveling, he emphasized the importance of education to his children and grandchildren. This included the establishment of a scholarship fund for students at St. Joseph Academy. He was also a devout Catholic, saying the rosary every day without fail, and was a lector at St. Thomas More Church until the age of 90. His pride and joy were his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren with whom he spent many hours playing cards. He was an avid golfer and scored his 2nd hole-in-one at age 83. He and his wife played bridge for many years. He was renowned for his storytelling. He challenged himself each day by working a crossword puzzle until his last few days. He is survived by his wife Ileane of 67 years, his 5 daughters, Marian Bellecci, Karen Baldwin (Al) , Linda Millburn (Chess), Lisa St. Romain (Phil), Madeleine Timpa (Anthony), 7 grandchildren, Rita Sheffield (Mark), Theresa Head (Bill), Paul St. Romain (Katherine), Allison Barrilleaux (Dustin), Peter Timpa, Marie Faucheux (Alex), Tara Krieger (Michelle) , 5 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, a brother Frank P. Bellecci and sister Rosalie Milano, who both reside in California. Visitation will be held at Greenoaks Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 26th, with the rosary from 5:00-5:30 pm followed by visitation 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm. Visitation will resume on Wednesday, December 27th at St. Thomas More Church at 9:00 am until Mass at 10:00 am followed by interment at Greenoaks Cemetery. Pallbearers are Gary Milano, Phil St. Romain, Anthony Timpa, Chess Millburn, Peter Timpa and Al Baldwin. Honorary pallbearer is Frank P. Bellecci.
