Alva Borue O'Brien "Al", almost 90, died on Monday, October 11, 2021, at his home near Ethel, LA. He was born on January 14, 1932 in Marshall, TX, and lived in Louisiana, Texas, and Arkansas as a child. After graduating from LSU he joined the Air Force and trained as a pilot and air traffic controller. He married Elizabeth Anne Byrnes of Ethel, LA in 1958. Alva served for twenty years in the United States Air Force during which time he and his growing family lived in many different states and several countries. After his retirement in 1975 as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force, the family moved to Ethel. Alva then worked in a position as the superintendent of the LSU Observatory in Clinton, LA, and subsequently taught high school mathematics at Jackson High School in Jackson, LA, retiring again in 1990. Although his stint at Jackson High School marked his last formal employment, he kept himself busy with a Boy Scout troop, professional photography, family genealogy, metal art, raising bulbs, and promoting the Saturday Market in Clinton in his spare time. Alva is survived by four children: Helen L. O'Brien and her husband Jeffrey T. Jones of Tucson, AZ; Margaret O. Scheers and husband Randolph M. Scheers of Houston, TX; David B. O'Brien of Baton Rouge, LA; Dr. Kurt B. O'Brien and his wife Donna B. O'Brien of New Iberia, LA; former daughter-in-law Elena S. O'Brien of Zachary, LA; eleven grandchildren: Miranda O'Brien, Arielle O'Brien, Elizabeth Scheers, Anne Jones, Rebecca Angoy, Katherine Prusock, Catherine O'Brien, Mallory Talley, Grace O'Brien, Ethan Patrick O'Brien, and Amy O'Brien; and two great-grandchildren: Lillian O'Brien and Eamon O'Brien. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Anne Byrnes O'Brien. Many thanks to Jessie Mae Matthews and Barbara Turner who cared for Al after the death of his wife, Anne, in December. Their kindness and efforts are greatly appreciated.
