Freddie "Juman" Smith entered into eternal rest on Monday, November 15, 2021. Freddie was born on December 26, 1945, in New Orleans, LA, to the late Freddie Smith, Sr., and Estelle Packnett Smith. He was the oldest of seven children. At the age of 12, he was baptized at the Church of God in Christ in New Orleans, LA. When the family moved to Baton Rouge, Freddie attended public schools and graduated from McKinley High School in 1963. He was active in all sports at McKinley, but his passion was baseball. In 1967, he earned a degree in Recreation from THE Grambling State University. Freddie led a very full life and remained active in sports as a member of several softball teams in Baton Rouge. He was a long-time employee of ExxonMobil, serving as a supervisor in the Exxon Research and Development Lab. He participated n the Exxon sponsored sports of basketball and softball. He led the "Resids" softball team to several championships before retiring to try his hand at entrepreneurship. He owned the Destination II Sports Bar, and he traveled frequently with The Finest, a band he managed. Then, industry lured him back to the labs at Ciba Geigy and Huntsman Chemicals, before he retired again in 2007. This time to enjoy fishing and spending time with family and friends. Always a loving father, Freddie's marriage to Patricia Haynes on May 15, 1987, increased his fatherly duties from four to six. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Patricia, and children: Michael Smith, Sheryl Randall, Cynthia Smith, and Jason Smith (Lisa) and Sheri and Carey Lyons, all of Baton Rouge. He will also be missed by siblings, Antoinette Collins, Loretta Bowers, Tyrone Smith (Sandra), Demetra Louis (Raymond), and Rene Smith, all of Baton Rouge, 12 grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Preceding him in death were his parents, a sister who died at birth, his brother, Felix, and a grandchild, Mykelle Smith. Please join the family for Celebration of Life Services on Monday, November 22, 2021 at Desselle Funeral Home, 263 Eddie Robinson Sr. Drive. Viewing from 9 – 11 a.m., services at 11 a.m. Interment will be at Southern Memorial Gardens, 3012 Blount Road. In lieu of flowers donations can be make to The McKinley Alumni Association.
