Melba Coleman Mills died peacefully in her home on December 9, 2021. She was 99 years old, a native of Grant Parish and resident of Baton Rouge. She was Catholic. She was born July 30, 1922, the eldest of four children of Lee and Bessie Coleman. Melba was one of the first female accountants in Baton Rouge, working for Hawthorn Weymouth & Carol and later with Franklin Press, from where she retired. She was also one of the first female HAM operators in the state. In the 1960s, she was active in the Baton Rouge Little Theatre and danced with a touring troop. She was a devoted member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church. She is survived by her sons, Jimmy Dale Bennett of Toledo Bend and David Coleman Mills, Sr. & wife Robin of Baton Rouge; grandsons Dale Bennett, David (DJ) Mills, Jr. and Mark Mills; sister Fay Hines & brother-in-law Jimmy; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Dorothy Roberts and brother Ray Coleman. A funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church on Friday, January 7, 2022, at 2:30pm, with visitation at 1:30pm, followed by inurnment in Mercy's Garden of Peace and Memorial Columbarium. Funeral arrangements by Greenoaks Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to Our Lady of Mercy Traditions for Tomorrow Campaign.

Mrs Melba I only knew you for a short time. You sure were very independent and I get that. I just pray if I live to the age you did I will be just as independent as you were! The dear lord no doubt accepted you with open harms. You will be missed by many and you flying high now RIP and watch out for your family from up above and know you will be proud
