Michael Levi Cross, born January 1, 1956, the son of James and Velta Jones Cross of Baker, departed this life early Monday morning, March 23, 2015. Michael was born as Michael Levi Shields in Baton Rouge to Norman Shields, Jr. and to Velta Rose Shields, with a name change to Cross when his mother re-married. Michael was baptized at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and served as an altar boy at the Saint Paul Catholic Church. Michael graduated from the Southern University Laboratory School where he played in the stage band under Dr. Isaac Greggs. He was an accomplished bass guitar player, playing with the Baton Rouge Community Chorus and Playhouse under the direction of Dr. Valerian Smith. Michael also played the bass guitar on records for several nationally known country recording artists, assisting in the musical arrangements. He purchased a home and resided for several years in Clinton, LA, then moving back to Baton Rouge. Michael was very talented with a keen sense of humor, designing a three dimensional chess board, and writing and recording songs. He diligently studied the Bible and wrote a book that he hoped to have had published. Michael is survived by his mother and father, James and Velta Cross of Baker, a brother, Andre L. Cross of Maud, TX, sister, Michelle Cross of Richardson, TX, wife, Jennifer Jinether Cross of Baton Rouge; two aunts, June Jones Harris of Baton Rouge and Geraldine Jones LaMotte (Dr. Harry Lamotte II) of Beverly Hills, CA; six first cousins, Dr. Gregory Harris (Maxine), Steven Harris (Lise) and Diane Armstrong of Baton Rouge, Dr. Angela LaMotte and Harry LaMotte III of Los Angeles and Dawn Harris Buckley of New Orleans; Other cousins include Roderick (Kimberly), Loyce Alexander both of New Oleans; his biological father, Norman Shields Jr. of Baton Rouge and a close friend and companion, Carolyn Immes of Baton Rouge. Viewing will be Friday, March 27, 2015 from 10AM to 11AM at Hall Davis and Sons Funeral Home, 9348 Scenic Hwy, followed by home going services (also at the funeral home) at 11AM. Arrangements by Hall Davis and Sons. Interment at Southern Memorial Gardens, 3012 Blount Road.
