Michael Cross Obituary

Michael Levi Cross, born January 1, 1956, the son of James and Velta Jones Cross of Baker, departed this life early Monday morning, March 23, 2015. Michael was born as Michael Levi Shields in Baton Rouge to Norman Shields, Jr. and to Velta Rose Shields, with a name change to Cross when his mother re-married. Michael was baptized at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and served as an altar boy at the Saint Paul Catholic Church. Michael graduated from the Southern University Laboratory School where he played in the stage band under Dr. Isaac Greggs. He was an accomplished bass guitar player, playing with the Baton Rouge Community Chorus and Playhouse under the direction of Dr. Valerian Smith. Michael also played the bass guitar on records for several nationally known country recording artists, assisting in the musical arrangements. He purchased a home and resided for several years in Clinton, LA, then moving back to Baton Rouge. Michael was very talented with a keen sense of humor, designing a three dimensional chess board, and writing and recording songs.
