Nancy Montero Obituary

Nancy Collins Montero entered peacefully into eternal rest at her home in Labadieville on August 3, 2022 at the age of 73. Her strong Catholic faith sustained her throughout her long journey with dystonia. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Tuesday, August 9, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Philomena Catholic Church in Labadieville. Brother Ray Hebert, S.C., an ordained Brother of the Sacred Heart, will be the celebrant. Visitation in the church will take place from 8:30 a.m. until Mass. Interment will be at Greenoaks Memorial Park, 9595 Florida Boulevard, Baton Rouge. Nancy is survived by her husband, Joseph Montero; her sister Sally Josephson (Bob); her brother-in-law Brother Paul Montero, S.C.; her nephews James Martin (Liz), Robert Josephson (Sarah), and Colle Josephson (Melissa); her nieces, Claire Martin Moore (Jeff) and Mary Martin Lowe (Scott); grand nieces and nephews, and cousins. She will also be missed by her faithful canine companion, JayJay. She was preceded in death by her parents Edward and Nan Watkins Collins, father and mother-in-law Odell and Anite Mabile Montero, her brother-in-law and sister-in-law Dawson and Margaret Montero Martin, and her niece Ann Martin. Nancy was born in New Orleans and was a former resident of Baton Rouge. She was a 1966 graduate of St. Joseph's Academy in Baton Rouge and a graduate of Loyola University in New Orleans. She taught in New Orleans and Baton Rouge and later was employed by the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. Nancy was an active member of St. Philomena Church and of the Labadieville community. She loved her church, her community, and all the people who came into her life. She was a founding member of the St. Philomena Adoration Chapel, a Thrift Store volunteer, a Eucharistic Minister, a member of the parish's bereavement committee, and a volunteer for church and school fairs and festivals. Nancy also shared her time and talents with children as a volunteer teacher and tutor and served on the school boards of St. Philomena School and the Diocese of Baton Rouge. Inheriting her mother's passion for painting, Nancy loved the arts and was an accomplished painter. Always a lover of animals, she supported and volunteered with HOPE for Animals in Thibodaux. She was a member of the Republican Women's Club and the Thibodaux Music Club. Nancy will be remembered by all who knew her for her beautiful smile, her love for entertaining family and friends, her enthusiasm in celebrating her Irish heritage, and her compassion for abandoned dogs. The family expresses deep and heartfelt gratitude to Shannon and Becky Prince and their children Dalton, Jack, and Addison for their years of loving and dedicated support and assistance. The family is grateful to their neighbors and friends who helped in countless ways; to Nancy's faithful sitters, Charlene, Jackie, Juanita, Ginger, Felicia, and Sheila; and to the dedicated staff of Heart of Hospice. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the SJA Foundation, 3015 Broussard Street, Baton Rouge, LA 70808, or to the charity of one's choice in Nancy's name.

My sincere condolences to Joe and to Nancy´s family as we remember our long time friend and many years of laughter growing up in Baton Rouge. I appreciate still hearing Nancy´s voice and being with her on visits to Louisiana in recent years. Our telephone calls and cards during her illness brought her closer although we are separated by too many miles. I´ll cherish the memories and her beautiful laughter that always brought comfort and joy to all who knew her. Be well my friend and rest comforted in God´s peace.
