Sophie Fernandez Bergeron, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend to many, passed away on October 7, 2021 at the age of 83. Sophie was born in Belle Rose, LA and grew up on Halfway Plantation near Belle Alliance. She attended Belle Rose Elementary School and Assumption High School. After graduation in 1956, she attended business school in Baton Rouge and went on to work as an administrative assistant at the state capital. In 1959, she married her high school sweetheart Jan, and together they moved to Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland where Jan was stationed during his Army service. They then returned home where they settled to raise their family. She worked at Dow Chemical in Plaquemine until the birth of her first child in 1961. From then on, she devoted her life to being a wonderful wife and mother to her four children. Sophie was a people person who easily made friends. She was very active at St. Philomena Catholic Elementary School as a regular volunteer. While her children attended E D White Catholic High School, she volunteered at Gym Dandy Thrift Store and was a regular Bird Feeder for the football team. She attended every event in which her children were involved always dressed in her Cardinal attire. Sophie enjoyed cooking, sewing, reading, and also took up tennis as a hobby once her children were older. She enjoyed entertaining with her closest Napoleonville friends, hosting family gatherings and reunions at her home, tailgating before LSU games, and taking many girls trips. She and Jan were blessed to be able to travel extensively together. When the grandchildren arrived, she embraced her new role with even more enthusiasm. MiMi, as she was affectionately known, was a fun, energetic, and loving grandmother. She is survived by her children Jan Bergeron, Jr. (Andre'), Jill B. Waguespack (Mike), Troy Bergeron, and David Bergeron; grandchildren, Sarah W. Pemberton (Ford), Anne Marie W. Hebert (Rory), Michael Waguespack, Jr, Sophie Waguespack, Corinne Bergeron, Caroline Bergeron, and Grant Bergeron; great-grandchild, John Ford Pemberton; sisters-in law Carol Fernendez and Faye Fernendez LeBlanc; in-laws Sam Bergeron (Anne), Don Bergeron (Diane), Yvette B. Winston (Roy), and Dr. William Bergeron (Sandy); and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 62 years, Jan Bergeron, her parents, Felix Fernandez and Bella LeBlanc Fernandez, and brothers, Phil Jr and Taylor Fernandez. The family would like to thank her caregivers, Jennifer Johnson, Celeste Hampton, Jennifer Truehill, Trulane Brown, and Ann Thibodeaux for their dedicated care. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 13 at St. Anne Catholic Church in Napoleonville from 8:30 am until Mass of Christian burial at 10:30 am. Interment will follow in the church's cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St Anne Catholic Church in Napoleonville. Landry's Funeral Home, Inc. is in charge of arrangements.
