Yolanda Jefferson Batiste was born Jan. 1, 1965, and died Wednesday, July 21, 2010. She was a private attorney who practiced in Plaquemine and was a public defender for the parishes of Iberville, West Baton Rouge and Pointe Coupee. She was also an attorney for the city of Plaquemine. A valedictorian and graduate of Plaquemine High School, she received her bachelor's degree from LSU and law degree from Southern University in Baton Rouge. She had been a member of New Resurrection Missionary Baptist Church in Plaquemine. Married to Judge Alvin Batiste Jr., she was the mother of Alvin Batiste Ill, Joceyln E. Batiste, Jules, M. Batiste, Anna M. Batiste, Marcus W. Williams and Marissa A. Batiste. She is also survived by her parents, Leroy and Edna Maria Dunn Jefferson; a grandchild, Jewel Johnson; a sister, Daphne A. Jefferson Carline; mother-in-law, Edith C. Batiste; sister-in-law, Marcia B. Wilson; brother-in-law, Maynard and wife Sherrie Batiste; a nephew, Kevin Carline; a niece, Maria Jefferson; uncles, Andrew and wife Geraldine Dunn, Herbert and wife Brenda Jefferson, William and wife Emelda Jefferson, and Samuel and wife Mary Creer; aunts, Selena LeBlanc, Carolyn and husband Otis Bynum, and Hilda Jefferson; godchild, Bertrone Travis Jr.; godfather, Anderson Foster; and devoted friends, Karen Butler, Cheryl Stewart, Deborah Jordan, Heidi Butler, Tony Clayton and Susan Jackson. Funeral service will be held at Plymouth Rock Baptist Church, 58830 Iron Farm Road, Plaquemine, Saturday, July 24, at 10 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Andrew Richardson. Interment in Grace Memorial Park. Services entrusted to Roscoe Mortuary of Plaquemine.
